IFAD's Strategic Framework Responds to Persistent Problems and Major Changes [viewed]

October 2011: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released its Strategic Framework for 2011-2015. One of the five strategic objectives of the Framework relates to improving resiliency for rural men and women to climate change, environmental degradation and market transformation, with a focus on both climate change adaptation and mitigation.

IFPRI Releases Paper on Climate Risk Management in Africa [viewed]

October 2011: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a paper exploring the adaptation benefits of sustainable land and water management (SLWM) practices at the local and landscape levels based on case studies in Kenya, Uganda, Niger and Nigeria.

Event: Regional Workshop for Africa: Climate Change - Impacts, Adaptation and Development in Mountain Regions [viewed]

With support of the World Bank Development Grant Facility, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat is organizing three regional meetings in Chile, Tajikistan and Uganda, for the Latin American, Central Asian, and African regions respectively. The meeting in Uganda is jointly planned with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Each regional meeting will aim to strengthen knowledge about the climate change impacts in mountain areas, discuss adaptation options in mountain ecosystems, and to promote better alliances and cooperation amongst countries with mountain territories so to reinforce their understanding of key issues.

UNFCCC Publishes Submissions on REDD+ Methodological Guidance [viewed]

19 October 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published views (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/MISC.7) on methodological guidance for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+).

UNECA Holds First Climate Change and Development Conference in Africa [viewed]

19 October 2011: The First Climate Change and Development in Africa Conference convened under the theme "Development First: Addressing climate change in Africa." The event sought to address the need for greatly improved climate data and information for Africa, in addition to strengthening the use of this information for policy and decision making.

UN-REDD Approves US$4 Million for REDD+ in Nigeria [viewed]

17 October 2011: At its seventh Policy Board Meeting, the UN-REDD Programme approved US$4 million to fund Nigeria's National Programme for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).

Indonesia and Malawi Join UN CC:Learn Pilot Countries [viewed]

14 October 2011: The UN CC:Learn Steering Group has selected two additional countries to participate in the 2011-2013 pilot implementation phase of the UN CC:Learn's “Pilot Projects to Strengthen Human Resources, Learning and Skills Development.” The selection was made with support provided by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC).
