UNEP12 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner addressed African ministers attending the 14th session of the African Ministerial Conference for the Environment (AMCEN), convening from 7-14 September 2012, in Arusha, Tanzania. Steiner underscored UNEP's commitment to assist African States in making the transition to a Green Economy, negotiating a new climate treaty, building awareness on chemicals and hazardous wastes, and improving the management of drylands.

CCAFS Study Documents Climate-Resilient Farming in East Africa [viewed]

CCAFS7 September 2012: The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) has released a study on the incremental adoption of climate-resilient farming by smallholders in East Africa. Farmers' strategies to cope with climate change, in the countries surveyed, include: adoption of short-cycle crop varieties and drought tolerant crops; planting of trees on farms; and intercropping.

Event: GEF STAP Workshop on Soil Organic Carbon and Carbon Benefits Project [viewed]

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) is organizing two workshops in Kenya to consider the role of soils in delivering global environmental benefits, and to share the tools developed by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)-GEF Carbon Benefits Project. A scoping workshop for the GEF on soil organic carbon for global benefits will be held 10-12 September at UNEP. On 13-16 September 2012, STAP and UNEP will lead a review workshop of the tools developed by the UNEP-GEF Carbon Benefits Project (CBP). The meeting will be held at Voi Wildlife Lodge in Tsavo.

ICRAF Newsletter Highlights 2011-2012 Annual Report, Nairobi Science Forum [viewed]

4 September 2012: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) published the August issue of its "Transformations" newsletter, which announces the release of its Annual Report, highlighting issues related to sustainable soil and water management, climate change, value chain management and conservation of native tree species. The newsletter also includes articles addressing farms, food security and climate change adaptation, and notes key publications and the Science Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.

Event: Climate Public Expenditure and Institutional Reviews [viewed]

The UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and partners will organize a workshop on aid effectiveness in the area of public expenditure related to climate change, bringing 100 government officials and development partners from the Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America regions to Bangkok. Particpants at the three-day workshop, titled "Climate Public Expenditure and Institutional Reviews: Workshop on Past Experience and the Way Forward" and convening from 10-12 September 2012, will work on recommendations for peer support and collaboration and produce guidelines for a new "Climate Change Public Expenditure Review Sourcebook".

Event: Thirteenth Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change [viewed]

The 13th RRI Dialogue, sub-titled "Status of Tenure Reforms in West and Central Africa and Impacts of Large-Scale Land Acquisitions, Extractive and Infrastructure Sectors," is being organized by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), the Commission des Forets d'Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC), the Cameroonian Ministry of Forest and Wildlife (MINFOF), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Participants will take stock of tenure reform in Central and West Africa since 2009, examining new pressures on forest lands from large scale land acquisitions, extractive industries, and infrastructure projects. This event was originally scheduled to take place in October, as the 12th RRI dialogue.

CIF, AfDB Funding to Bolster Niger Water Sector [viewed]

3 September 2012: Niger has been awarded US$22 million in financing from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), in addition to financial and technical resources from the African Development Bank (AfDB), to support the Niger Water Resources Mobilization and Development Project, as well as provide assistance to scale-up best practices within a number of other water resource management projects in Niger.

Report Outlines Lessons Learned from REDD+ Readiness in the Republic of the Congo [viewed]

28 August 2012: The World Resources Institute (WRI) and Congo Basin Forest Fund (CBFF) have released a report on lessons learned from readiness activities in the Republic of the Congo towards reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+).
