3 October 2008: The Marine Environment Protection Committee
of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is meeting in London, UK, for
its 58th session, from 6-10 October 2008. During the meeting, the Committee
will continue its work on developing a mandatory regime to control greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping.
29 September 2008: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched a new study entitled “Deploying Renewables: Principles for Effective Policies,” which includes a comparative analysis of the performance of various renewables promotion policies around the world.
24 September 2008: The International Labor Organization
(ILO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), International Trade Union Confederation
and the International Organization of Employers have released the first
comprehensive study on the emergence of a “green economy” and its impact on the
world of work.
September 2008: The European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, at its 8-10 September 2008 meeting in Brussels, Belgium, is discussing, inter alia: supporting early demonstration of sustainable power generation from fossil fuels; emission performance standards for new passenger cars; geological storage of carbon dioxide; industrial emissions (integrated pollution prevention and control); greenhouse gas emission allowance trading system; and shared effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
7 September 2008: Experts gathered from 7-9 September 2008,
in Akureyri, Iceland, for the Polar Law Symposium, hosted by the UN University
(UNU) and the University of Akureyri, to discuss new challenges arising in the
Arctic and Antarctic.
25 August 2008: In a statement to the third Session of the
Ad hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention
(AWG-LCA 3), which met in Accra, Ghana, from 21-27 August 2008, the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) addressed the various
approaches and options under which greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from
international civil aviation can be effectively addressed.
25 August 2008: In a statement to the First Part of the
Sixth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I
Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP6), which took place in Accra, Ghana,
from 21-27 August 2008, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
referred to recent developments in the field of environmental protection,
including: progress made by ICAO's Committee on Aviation Environmental
Protection in prioritizing and intensifying all activities related to
greenhouse gas emissions (GHG); and the holding of the second meeting of the
Group on International Aviation and Climate Change, where the possible
establishment of short, medium and long term goals for fuel burn was discussed.
August 2008: The Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Urban
Community of Practice is organizing the ADB Urban Day 2008, which will take
place in Manila, Philippines, on 8 September 2008. Urban Day 2008 will bring
together representatives from national and local governments, international
communities of practice, the private sector, civil society and academia to
discuss urban environment, sanitation and transport, as well as city region
development, and municipal finance and governance.
August 2008: The International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO) has made a written submission to the third Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term
Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), which is taking place in
Accra, Ghana, from 21-27 August 2008. The submission includes a presentation of
ICAO's past and current work in reducing emissions from aircrafts and the
current international legal regime.
August 2008: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is organizing, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Jordan, an “Eco-cities Forum,” which will take place from 18-20 October 2008, at the Dead Sea in Jordan. The Forum aims to promote awareness, best practices, investment opportunities and technology transfer in the environmental sector in Jordan as well as among municipalities in the Mediterranean region.
