EU Court Finds Measures on Aviation Emissions Compatible with International Law [viewed]

21 December 2011: The Court of Justice of the EU (ECJ) has ruled that the EU decision to include the aviation sector in its Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012, thereby providing that all airlines – including those of third countries – will have to acquire and surrender emission allowances for their flights departing from and arriving at European airports, is lawful under international law.

Event: Transforming Transportation [viewed]

The ninth annual “Transforming Transportation” event will take place at the World Bank in Washington, DC, US, from 26-27 January 2012, and will focus on big ideas to scale up sustainable transport best practices in cities worldwide. The plenary session on Day 1 will discuss the future of the city, and on Day 2 it will look beyond the transport sector for inspiration on how to scale up best practices. Other sessions will include moderated panel discussions and rapid presentations of innovative ideas. The agenda also features screenings of urban transport videos and a cocktail reception to honor the late Dr. Leon "Lee" Schipper. Transforming Transportation 2012 is open to the public, and is organized by EMBARQ, The World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Institute for Transportation Development and Policy, Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, and the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport.

IEA Report on Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Identifies Main Drivers of Increased Efficiency [viewed]

IEA2 December 2011: The International Energy Agency (IEA), in cooperation with the Global Fuel Efficiency Initiative (GFEI), has published a report comparing fuel efficiency and other characteristics over a large sample of registered vehicles in 21 countries. The sample accounts for 90% of global car sales, and the results show a 1.7% annual improvement over the 2005-2008 period, which is well below the required 2.7% improvement per year needed from 2005 to 2030 in order to halve vehicle CO2 emissions.
