Event: 61st Session of the Marine Protection Committee of the IMO [viewed]

This session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), will focus on the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from international shipping. Session participants are also expected to adopt the revised Annex III of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), covering pollution from packaged goods, and address issues relating to the implementation of the ballast water management and ship recycling conventions.

Event: UNECE/WHO Europe Workshop on Safe and Healthy Walking and Cycling in Urban Areas [viewed]

This workshop will focus on cooperation between national and local authorities, industry and civil society in designing, planning, financing and producing legislation to support walking and cycling in cities. It is organized by the Georgian Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure and the City of Batumi, with support from other governments through the Pan-European Programme on Transport, Health and Environment (THE PEP) Trust Fund, which is run jointly by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe.

UNEP Releases Brief on Green Economy and MDGs [viewed]

20 September 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released "A Brief for Policymakers on the Green Economy and Millennium Development Goals" (MDGs), which concludes that investment in clean energy, sustainable transport, forests and environmentally-friendly agriculture is essential for meeting the MDGs. The brief was launched at the UN Summit on the MDGs, convening from 20-22 September 2010, in New York, US.

Event: GSI-UNEP Conference on Increasing the Momentum of Fossil-Fuel Subsidy Reform [viewed]

The Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are holding a two-day conference, titled "Increasing the Momentum of Fossil-Fuel Subsidy Reform: Developments and Opportunities," to bring together country delegates and experts from international organizations, NGOs, universities and the industrial sector. The event will feature representatives from international organizations such as the OECD, UNEP, World Bank, WTO and OPEC, as well as international fora such as G-20, APEC and the Friends group of countries that support reforming fossil-fuel subsidies, who will share and review their perspectives and activities. It will discuss not only the scale and impacts of consumer and producer subsidies, but especially focus on international developments, reform strategies and opportunities for enhanced international cooperation.
