EEA Releases Preliminary Data on Emissions Ceilings Directive Limits [viewed]

EEA22 February 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released preliminary data that shows that 12 countries have exceeded the 2010 emissions limits under the EU National Emission Ceilings (NEC) Directive, which covers: sulphur dioxide (SO2); nitrogen oxides (NOx); non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs); and ammonia (NH3). NOx and NMVOCs are greenhouse gases (GHGs) contributing to climate change.

Moscow Meeting Adopts Declaration on Inclusion of International Civil Aviation in the EU-ETS (photo courtesy of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation)22 February 2012: A group of 23 countries meeting in Moscow, Russian Federation, adopted the Joint Declaration of the Moscow Meeting on Inclusion of International Civil Aviation in the EU-ETS, which outlines the participants' shared position that the EU and its Member States must cease application of the Directive 2008/101/EC to airlines and aircraft operators registered in third States. Under the Directive, international civil aviation was included in the EU-Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) as of 1 January 2012.

IEA Report on Energy Policy of Slovak Republic Calls for Regional Cooperation on Energy Security [viewed]

IEA6 February 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report entitled “Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Slovak Republic Review,” which lauds Slovakia's efforts on energy efficiency, and notes the essential role of greater regional cooperation, particularly in gas and electricity interconnections, in enhancing energy security and market competition for the region as a whole.

Event: Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO: 63rd Session [viewed]

Market-based measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping will be among the agenda items discussed by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), when it meets for its 63rd session. The MEPC will also discuss issues relating to the implementation of the ship recycling and ballast water management conventions, and consider the adoption of amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) relating to reception facilities in small island developing States.

European Finance Ministers Adopt Conclusions on Durban Follow-up [viewed]

EU21 February 2012: During the Council meeting on Economic and Financial Affairs, European Finance Ministers adopted conclusions on "Climate Finance – Follow-up to the Durban Conference," which welcome the approval of the governing instrument for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) at the Durban Climate Change Conference, the work programme on long-term finance, and the decision on financing for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries).

Event: Sixth Aviation and Environment Summit [viewed]

The sixth Aviation and Environment Summit will bring together around 350 industry and stakeholder representatives, in Geneva, Switzerland, to explore ways in which aviation can continue to provide jobs, power economic growth and serve the flying public while minimizing the industry's environmental footprint. The March 2012 Summit will build on the 2008 Summit, which provided a forum for the signing of a declaration on climate action by leaders from across the aviation industry.

Event: ICLEI - 2012 World Congress [viewed]

The ICLEI World Congress 2012 takes place every three years and provides mayors, local government officials, representatives of international institutions and other partners opportunities for peer exchange, knowledge-sharing, capacity building and on-site visits and exhibits. ICLEI is supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), the World Bank and others. Key themes to be addressed during the conference include: green urban economy; changing citizens, changing cities; greening events; and food security and how can biodiversity protection be integrated into municipal planning and decision making.
