UNFCCC Releases SBSTA Documents for Bonn Session [viewed]

UNFCCC4 June 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a series of documents that will be discussed by the Subsidiary Body on Scientific and technical Advice (SBSTA) at its 38th session, taking place in Bonn, Germany. The documents relate to methodological issues related to the Kyoto Protocol, the new market-based mechanism, emissions from international transport, the UNFCCC reporting guidelines, high-carbon reservoirs, and a framework for various approaches.

UNEP Risø Centre Outlines Elements of a New Climate Agreement by 2015 [viewed]

UNEP RISO Centre3 June 2013: The UNEP Risø Centre, in collaboration with UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), has released 'Perspectives 2013,' a publication that features articles on the "Elements of a New Climate Agreement by 2015." The publication considers key issues to address with a view to reach a climate change agreement by 2015 to come into effect by 2020, as agreed at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC.

WSIS Forum Recognizes Role of ICTs in Smart Climate Monitoring, Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

ITU logo17 May 2013: Participants at the annual World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum agreed on outcome documents that highlight discussions on, inter alia: smart climate change monitoring; women's empowerment; information and communication technologies (ICTs) innovations and standards; and cyberspace security. Participants also considered ICTs and post-2015 goals, reviewed the Implementation of the WSIS Outcomes and produced a Statement on the WSIS+10 Visioning.

ICT Symposium Adopts Roadmap on Smart, Sustainable Cities [viewed]

ITU logo9 May 2013: Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are critical in creating smart sustainable cities and addressing climate change, according to participants at the Eighth International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change. Participants adopted a 'Turin Roadmap' that calls on ITU to promote smart technologies in cities and develop key performance indicators to assess ICTs impacts in cities and countries around the world.

UNDP Reports on Environment and Sustainable Development Work in 2008-2012 [viewed]

Event: International Symposium on Sustainable Cities: Empowering Local Governments through Capacity Building [viewed]

The UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) will host this international symposium to strengthen dissemination and sharing of good practices and lessons learned on fostering sustainable cities, in recognition of the role of cities in protecting the environment, improving disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience and reducing poverty. The symposium aims to identify strategies to strengthen local government institutional and technical capacity to address poverty reduction and slum upgrading, urban development, urban economic growth, urban transport and water and sanitation. The symposium also aims to identify areas for further capacity building and knowledge sharing and to identify innovative financing models to support urban infrastructure. The event will bring together representatives of governments, including and local government and planning officials, UN agencies, multilateral and regional development banks, the private sector and civil society in plenary sessions, working group sessions and panel discussions. The symposium is planned to overlap with the ‘Incheon Sister and Friendly Cities Conference,' which will be held in Incheon on 28 September 2013, and include mayors from cities around the world. The two events will have a joint closing session that will discuss advancing and implementing the sustainable urbanization agenda.

EEA Highlights Carbon Dioxide Emission Reductions from New Cars in 2012 [viewed]

EEA30 April 2013: The European Environment Agency (EEA) released a report, titled 'Monitoring CO2 Emissions from New Passenger Cars in the EU: Summary of Data for 2012,' which highlights a 2.6% decrease in average carbon dioxide emissions from the EU car fleet in 2012.
