UNFCCC27 October 2015: The Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity awards, which honor innovative, scalable and replicable climate actions from around the world, have been announced. The 16 selected initiatives come from around the world and a variety of sectors, highlighting inspiring mitigation and adaptation activities. The announcement of the 2015 Lighthouse Activities comes as Parties to the UNFCCC prepare to adopt a universal climate change agreement at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

SLoCaT Analyses Transport Aspects of INDCs [viewed]

slocat19 October 2015: An analysis of the 120 intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted as of 6 October 2015 to the UNFCCC finds that over 75% of the INDCs include the transport sector as a source of mitigation potential. Carried out by the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), the analysis also finds that upward of 60% of INDCs include transport sector mitigation measures.

WHO Report: Reduce SLCPs to Protect Health [viewed]

WHO22 October 2015: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report for policymakers on reducing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), such as black carbon, ozone, methane and carbon dioxide (CO2), which it says contribute to climate change and lead to more than seven million deaths linked to air pollution every year. Titled ‘Reducing global health risks through mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants,' the report recommends immediate actions by which countries, health and environment ministries, and cities can reduce emissions, protect health and avoid illness and premature deaths.

LAC Regional Workshop Discusses Sustainable Transport and Climate Mitigation [viewed]

leds_slocat20 October 2015: A webcast regional workshop, sponsored by the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and several other partners, discussed prospects in Latin America for sustainable transport actions to mitigate climate change. The workshop was held on 13 October 2015, in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and was webcast to 75 participants in 15 Latin American countries by Finanzas Carbono.

UNCTAD Reviews Maritime Shipping Trends, Needs for 2030 Agenda [viewed]

UNCTAD14 October 2015: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) published its 2015 'Review of Maritime Transport,' showing a slow recovery from the global financial crisis and a small increase in developing countries' share of global container traffic. SIDS DOCK Treaty Enters into Force [viewed]

sidsdock30 September 2015: A treaty establishing the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Initiative – SIDS DOCK - entered into force on 30 September 2015, with a ceremony at UN Headquarters featuring the official handover of instruments of ratification by the first 11 contracting Parties: Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the Cook Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles and Tuvalu. By the treaty, SIDS DOCK is established as an intergovernmental organization - the first global intergovernmental organization of island nations, according to a press release.

REN21, UNIDO Publish Report on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Southern Africa [viewed]

REN21 - SADC - UNIDO7 October 2015: The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have published a report that illustrates the achievements of cooperation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in promoting the market-based uptake of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and services. The report, titled the ‘SADC Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report,' was launched at a side event during the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC) 2015, which convened from 4-7 October 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa.
