UNCCD Executive Secretary Briefs UN Security Council [viewed]

UNCCD logo​26 May 2016: While not offering a silver bullet, a land-based approach involving increased investment in land rehabilitation for frontline villages and communities would be “cheaper and more effective than investing in walls, wars and relief,” stressed UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Monique Barbut at a UN Security Council briefing in New York, US on 26 May 2016. The briefing aimed to enhance understanding of the security implications of climate change in the Sahel and was addressed by representatives of more than 15 countries, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.

SLCPs Assessment in Latin America and the Caribbean Outlines Key Messages for Decision Makers [viewed]

CCAC23 May 2016: The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have issued the first regional assessment of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. Titled 'Integrated Assessment of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants in Latin America and the Caribbean: Summary for Decision Makers,' the publication aims to enable policy makers to: better quantify and understand SLCP emissions in the region; identify measures for delivering near-term climate and air pollution benefits; and estimate the reductions in regional air pollutants that could be achieved by implementing these measures, with associated health and crop yield benefits.

IPoA Mid-term Review Calls for Greater Support to LDCs [viewed]

review29 May 2016: The Mid-term Review of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the Decade 2011-2020 has closed with a call for greater support to the world's more vulnerable countries. The review focused on the 48 LDCs and their progress over the past five years, and on finding ways to accelerate their sustainable development. The conference resulted in a political declaration that had been negotiated among UN Member States in the months leading up to the review.

ITU, UNECE Launch United for Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative [viewed]

unece_itu26 May 2016: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have launched a global initiative to advocate for public policy that will promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a catalyst for transitioning to "smart sustainable cities." The United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiative will help implement Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

EBRD to Dedicate Next 25 Years to Green Economy Transition [viewed]

UNEA-2 Discusses Implementation of 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement [viewed]

unep_may1628 May 2015: The second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has concluded with the adoption of 24 resolutions as well as decisions about UNEA-3. Some major areas of focus of the meeting included, inter alia: implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement; illegal trade in wildlife; and marine litter and debris. UNEA-2 convened under the theme, 'Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.'

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Bonn Talks Focus on Adaptation Planning, Reporting, Implementation, Support [viewed]

May 2016 news relating to adaptation and loss and damage brought out some of those interlinkages with particular prominence. Not only do events, publications and initiatives reported here contribute to the implementation of SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) generally, they also help implement a range of other SDGs and related targets.

G7 Declaration Supports Action on 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement on Climate Change [viewed]

g7_201627 May 2016: The 2016 Group of 7 (G7) Ise-Shima Summit in Japan adopted a Declaration that addresses major global economic and political challenges, and commits to making progress on development, economic and security issues to ensure global peace, security and prosperity. In the Declaration, leaders commit to efforts to implement commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Africa Forum Makes Recommendation for HLPF, Regional Follow-up [viewed]

UNECA27 May 2016: Inclusion should be the lens for ensuring integrated approaches to the implementation, follow-up and review of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, according to participants at the Second Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD). ARFSD 2 convened in advance of the 2016 session of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), as part of a series of regional preparatory processes to identify regional sustainable development priorities and generate recommendations to strengthen the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
