Event: 2016 AFDB Annual Meetings [viewed]

The 2016 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) will convene under the theme 'Energy and Climate Change,' which draws on one of the Bank's 'High 5' priority areas, namely to 'Light up and Power Africa,' and reflects the Bank's New Deal on Energy and decisions emanating from the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015. The Bank's Annual Meetings are its largest annual event, bringing together approximately 5,000 participants, and featuring around 40 official events in addition to the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors. The Meetings enable representatives of government, business, civil society and media to discuss the social and economic development of Africa.

AU Assembly Addresses Human Rights, 2030 Agenda, Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

African Union (AU)31 January 2016: African Heads of State, leaders and other stakeholders discussed the implementation of Africa's Agenda 2063 and ways to advance human rights, particularly women's rights, during the 26th session of the African Union (AU) Assembly, which convened under the theme, ‘2016: African Year of Human Rights, with particular focus on the Rights of Women.'

UNISDR Conference Launches Science and Technology Partnership [viewed]

UNISDR29 January 2016: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) convened the Science and Technology Conference on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030, which aimed to harness the power of science and technology in implementing the Sendai Framework. The event opened with a tribute to the hundreds of scientists who have contributed their time to research climate change and its impacts.

Global Forum Endorses Guiding Principles for Green Economy Learning [viewed]

Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications Launches DRR Initiatives [viewed]

ITU logo28 January 2016: Information and communication technology (ICT) experts are working to harness the power of telecommunications to both prevent and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. Gathered for the second 'Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications (GET-2016): Saving Lives,' an international event focusing on the intersection of emergency telecommunications and climate change mitigation and adaptation, 500 participants from 90 countries adopted two global ICT initiatives aimed at enhancing disaster risk reduction (DRR).

State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources Report Urges Action to Conserve Livestock Diversity for Resilient Agriculture [viewed]

fao_headquarters27 January 2016: 'The Second Report on the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture' (SoW-AnGR), published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), underlines the key importance of livestock diversity for adapting production systems to the impacts of climate change and meeting global challenges such as increasing demand for animal protein. The report finds that global livestock diversity remains at risk, and calls for stronger efforts to conserve the existing pool of animal genetic resources.

IISD Event Explores Canada's Contribution to SDGs, Climate Change Agreement [viewed]

iisd25 January 2016: Over 150 people attended an event, titled 'Canada in the Post-2015 World,' which was organized by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and hosted by the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada. The event provided an early look at the landmark agreements achieved in 2015 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and an opportunity to consider how Canada can contribute to sustainable development in the wake of these agreements.

E15 Examines Global Trade and Investment for Sustainable Development, Climate Action [viewed]

inititaive1522 January 2016: The E15 Initiative, organized by The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and the World Economic Forum (WEF), released a series of papers on policy options for responding to critical global challenges, along with recommendations for reshaping the global trade and investment system. According to the Initiative, further work is needed to gain clarity on national actions that countries must take to meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
