Winners of UNEP Award Urge Action on Climate Change [viewed]

Winners22 April 2008: The 2008 Champions of the Earth awards were presented in Singaporein conjunction with the annual Business for the Environment Summit (B4E). The recipients of the award, according to Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), are linked by “a clear thread – climate change.”

ITU Tasked with Climate Change Challenge [viewed]

23 April 2008: The first International Telecommunication Union (ITU) symposium on information and communications technologies (ICTs) and climate change closed on 16 April 2008, with an agreement that the ITU should play a significant role in the global effort to combat climate change. The symposium, co-organized and hosted by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, convened in Kyoto, Japan, from 15-16 April 2008. Participants concluded that the ITU's Standardization Sector (ITU-T) would be tasked with development of an internationally agreed standard methodology to measure the impact of ICTs on climate change.

World Health Day 2008 Focuses on Climate Change [viewed]

Margaret_chan_bioThe World Health Organization (WHO) celebrated World Health Day on 7 April 2008 under the theme “Protecting health from climate change.” WHO selected this theme in recognition of the diverse threats to global public health security that climate warming poses, including the changing dynamics of infectious diseases outbreaks; the recurrence of natural disasters; and intensification of deforestation, floods and desertification.

G8 Development Ministers Highlight Climate Change-Development Link [viewed]

April 2008: G8 Ministers and senior officials responsible for development cooperation met from 5-6 April 2008, in Tokyo, Japan, along with representatives from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Republic of Korea, South Africa, the ASEAN Secretariat, the AU Commission, the OECD, UNDP, UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO and the World Bank. The meeting was held with a view to provide political input and support to the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, the Third High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana, the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and the Follow-up Conference on Financing for Development in Doha. Ministers addressed the development agenda for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, and held outreach sessions on: expanding partnerships for development; climate change and development; and human security and the achievement of the MDGs.
