1 September 2008: Addressing the Water Tribune at the
International Expo, which is taking place in Zaragoza, Spain, from 14 June to
14 September 2008, under the theme “Water and Sustainable Development,” UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recalled the UN's commitment to the protection
and adequate management of water resources, as well as the water-related
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
September 2008: The sixth quarterly International Polar Day,
which will be celebrated on 24 September 2008, will address how climate change
and renewed exploitation present urgent challenges to Arctic people, including
by examining the health impacts of climate change on the Arctic residents and
the focus of monitoring programmes of the polar environment on climate change.
27 August 2008: This toolkit is aimed at UN Country Teams
and other development agents, to provide guidance on how to engage indigenous
peoples and include their perspectives in development processes.
26 August 2008: Climate change was among the topics
discussed in official talks between Han Seung-soo, Prime Minister of the
Republic of Korea, and Srgjan Kerim, President of the UN General Assembly
(UNGA), on 25 August 2008.
28 August 2008: The Africa Carbon Forum will take place from 3-5 September 2008, in Dakar, Senegal. At the thirteenth Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Bali, Indonesia in December 2007, the Secretariat of the UNFCCC announced its intent to convene the first Africa Carbon Forum, in collaboration with the International Emissions Trading Association and the partner agencies of the Nairobi Framework, including the UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme, World Bank and African Development Bank.
27 August 2008: The seventh issue of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Technology Watch Briefing Report, entitled “Next-Generation Networks and Energy Efficiency,” has been released.
August 2008: The twelfth meeting of the Joint Implementation
(JI) Supervisory Committee will take place from 11–12 September 2008, on the UN
Campus in Bonn, Germany.
August 2008: The Focus Group on informational and
communication technologies (ICTs) and climate change, established by the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will hold its first meeting from
1-3 September 2008, at ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
21 August 2008: The Supporting Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development (SEED) Initiative has announced the winners of its 2008 SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development. The SEED Initiative is a global network for action on sustainable development partnerships, founded by IUCN, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), to deliver progress toward the internationally-agreed goals in the UN's Millennium Declaration and the commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
August 2008: The UN Environment Management Group (EMG) is
organizing a workshop on Climate Neutral UN, to be held from 1-3 September
2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
