21 October 2008: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN
Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have submitted
reports on progress in the implementation of Article 4, paragraphs 8 and 9, of
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and of decision 1/CP.10
to the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation, which will hold its 29th
session in Poznan, Poland, from 1-10 December 2008.
23 October 2008: At a press conference at UN Headquarters in
New York, US, representatives of the Association of Caribbean States said
countries of the Caribbean region were headed for “hard and difficult times”
unless they took action on climate change, with the cooperation and support of
the international community.
22 October 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a Green Economy Initiative, which seeks to respond to the global economic downturn by focusing economic growth and job creation in environmental industries.
21 October 2008: Speaking at the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Global Standards Symposium, held on 20 October
2008, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Malcolm Johnson, ITU Telecommunication
Standardization Bureau Director, called on the information and communication
technology (ICT) industry to play its role in addressing climate change.
16 October 2008: The UN team in Brussels has released its
third annual report, which details UN/EU partnership achievements. The report
is based on inputs collected from UN country offices around the world. Emphasis
is placed on the support that the UN and EU provide to national development
strategies and initiatives related to strengthening national capacities.
21 October 2008: Representatives of over 150 corporations,
civil society organizations, governments and UN agencies gathered in Geneva,
Switzerland, on 21 October 2008, for the first meeting of signatories to
‘Caring for Climate,' a voluntary global action platform jointly launched in
2007 by the UN Global Compact, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
17 October 2008: The UNFCCC Secretariat has launched a photo
contest aimed at raising awareness of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
The contest invites digital photos of CDM projects that reflect the theme of
the contest, “CDM changing lives.”
16 October 2008: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that
it is on schedule to complete the live connection of its International
Transaction Log (ITL) with the EU Community Independent Transaction Log (CITL)
and 26 EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) registries.
17 October 2008: Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), gave a presentation at a discussion entitled “Securing Asia's Energy Future” held by the Asia Society, in New York, US, on 16 October.
17 October 2008: Two sets of seven donor countries and seven potential recipient countries have been selected to serve on the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Trust Fund Committee and the Strategic Climate Fund (SCF) Trust Fund Committee, respectively, to oversee the decisions concerning investments and implementation of the recently created World Bank Climate Investment Funds (CIF).
