43rd Pacific Islands Forum Develops Leaders Communique [viewed]

PIFS30 August 2012: The 43rd Pacific Islands Forum convened in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, from 28-30 August 2012, under the theme of “Large Oceans Island States – the Pacific Challenge.” Issues discussed at the meeting included the outcomes of the recent UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), the Oceanscape initiative, climate change, and radioactive contaminants in the Marshall Islands. The 43rd PIF Communique includes the key commitments of Pacific Leaders.

Event: Introduction to a Green Economy: Concepts and Applications [viewed]

This e-learning course is being organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and will take place from 8 October to 30 November 2012. The course will focus on the different concepts and facets of the green economy, as well as on the challenges and opportunities for advancing low-carbon, resource efficient and socially-inclusive development.

World Water Week 2012 Opens with Focus on Water and Food Security [viewed]

26 August 2012: World Water Week 2012 is underway in Stockholm, Sweden, with a focus on the theme "Water and Food Security." The programme aims to engage participants on challenges posed by increased competition for water resources, driven in part by population growth and climate change, and its effects on agriculture and food security. World Water Week is organized annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).

WWAP Publishes Green Accounting for Water Report [viewed]

August 2012: The World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has published a report, titled “Green Accounting and Data Improvement for Water Resources,” which examines the incorporation of water-related indicators into environmental accounting systems by the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounts for Water (SEEAW), Eurostat, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

ADB Releases Country Environmental Analysis on China, Recommends Fiscal Reform for Green Growth [viewed]

ADB15 August 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released an updated Country Environmental Analysis of China, titled “Toward an Environmentally Sustainable Future.” The 225-page report details the environmental achievements of China over the last five years, and current challenges including water pollution, water scarcity, and solid waste.

UNISDR Announces Online Dialogue for Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

14 August 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that it will convene an online dialogue on a post-2015 Framework for disaster risk reduction (DRR). The dialogue will take place from 27 August - 30 November 2012, and will form the first round of a series of online consultations in the lead up to the World Conference on Disaster Reduction, scheduled to take place in 2015, in Japan.

10 August 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has released a report of the UN Secretary-General on agriculture development and food security, which examines the challenges of achieving food and nutrition security, as well as progress in implementation of sustainable agriculture policies and practices based on the Five Rome Principles for Sustainable Global Food Security.
