Event: COP 21 NAMA Fair [viewed]

Organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) Fair will present examples of NAMAs that support low-emissions development and inspire further transformational action on the ground in developing countries. The Fair will provide a platform for mutual learning and exchange of experiences, as well as an opportunity meet with public and private international organizations actively engaged in supporting low-emissions development in developing countries. The Fair is organized in partnership with various organizations, including the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

MOP7 Marks Global Opening of UNECE Water Convention, Adopts Reporting Mechanism [viewed]

United Nations19 November 2015: The seventh Meeting of the Parties (MOP7) to the 1992 Helsinki Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes marked the global opening of the Convention to countries beyond the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region, adopted a reporting mechanism, and endorsed a policy guidance note on assessing the benefits of transboundary cooperation on water issues.

UNGA Meets Informally on Refugee Crisis [viewed]

unga7019 November 2015: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) held an informal meeting on advancing a comprehensive response to the global humanitarian and refugee crisis. Participants discussed: providing protection including through third-country resettlement; ensuring adequate and predictable financing; and increasing support to receiving countries. Many said it is not possible to continue business-as-usual in humanitarian affairs, and welcomed the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit.

UN High-Level Events Address Water, Sanitation and DRR; UNSGAB Launches Concluding Report [viewed]

un_sanitation_day19 November 2015: The UN addressed the role of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and water management in ensuring food security, increasing access to energy and tackling urbanization challenges at the Second UN Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters. The Session convened as part of a series of coordinated events for the UN High-Level Water and Sanitation Days 2015, which included World Toilet Day and culminated with the final meeting of the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).

WorldRisk Report 2015: Food Insecurity Increases Disaster Risk [viewed]

The UN University (UNU) has launched a report addressing the consequences of extreme natural events in 171 countries, and the connection between food security and disaster risk. Upon the report's launch, Peter Mucke, Managing Director of the WorldRiskReport 2015, said crises and disasters cause hunger, the “catastrophic effects of natural hazards” can be decreased by ensuring that people are fed, and hungry people are more vulnerable to disasters, wars and conflicts.

Arab Countries Agree on Roadmap to Implement Sendai Framework [viewed]

unisdr_arab13 November 2015: The Arab region agreed on a roadmap for implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 in order to reduce disaster losses, and which is intended to revitalize the disaster risk coordination mechanism established in 2007 by the League of Arab States. More than 120 participants representing governments, cities, academia, civil society, youth and international organizations met in Cairo, Egypt, to launch an Arab Strategy for DRR specific to the region's needs and priorities and aligned with the Sendai Framework's targets.

El Salvador, Nauru and Somalia Submit INDCs [viewed]

UNFCCC17 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that El Salvador, Nauru and Somalia have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 165. All three INDCs are submitted in the context of sustainable development plans or laws that are in place or that the countries have planned, and note that their contributions depend largely on external financing and support.

Business, Civil Society Leaders Call for Securing Ambitious Long-term Goal in Paris [viewed]

thebteam16 November 2015: A group of business and civil society leaders, led by the B Team, issued an open letter to Heads of State in support of an ambitious climate change agreement. In the letter, they request that the existing commitment by Parties to the UNFCCC to limit global average temperature increase to 2°C above pre-industrial levels be translated into an actionable long-term goal at the UN Paris Climate Change Conference.

CARICOM Celebrates Energy Week, Energy Centre Inauguration [viewed]

CARICOM14 November 2015: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) hosted the fifth CARICOM Energy Week (CEW) under the theme 'EmPOWERING Our Sustainable Development.' The annual awareness-raising event highlights the importance of energy for economic development in the region. To mark CEW, the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) was inaugurated, and a baseline report for the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS) was released.
