Africa Regional Meeting Sets Urbanization Priorities Ahead of Habitat III [viewed]

h329 February 2016: Participants at the Africa Regional Meeting for the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) identified priorities for sustainable urban development in the coming decades, with a focus on regional urbanization to strengthen transitions and improve existing conditions. The conference resulted in the Abuja Declaration for Habitat III, titled 'Africa's Priorities for the New Urban Agenda.' Habitat III will convene in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016.

IPBES Approves Assessments on Pollinators, Scenarios and Modelling [viewed]

ipbes428 February 2016: The Fourth Plenary session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-4) approved summaries for policy makers (SPMs) of the Platform's first assessments on Pollination, Pollinators and Food Production, and on Scenarios and Models for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Delegates also launched several new assessments and elected Robert Watson (UK) as the Platform's new Chair.

Business Highlights Opportunities, Challenges Posed by SDGs [viewed]

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)February 2016: The private sector is identifying opportunities to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to recent publications and blogs. Business groups and other researchers have highlighted sustainability trends that will affect the private sector, addressing key areas for corporate leadership in implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change; the role of the mobile communications industry; concerns about the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism's (TFM) engagement with business; infrastructure financing; and a campaign to identify ‘SDG Pioneers.'

February 2016 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

february2016_energy1 March 2016: During the month of February, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) and the World Bank announced sustainable energy project funding and initiatives. In addition, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and EIB released publications related to finance and the clean energy sector, and AfDB, EBRD and the World Bank reported on events highlighting sustainable energy solutions.

UNCCD Announces WDCD Slogan, Highlights Links to Climate Action [viewed]

???????????????????????23 February 2016: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has announced that the slogan for the 2016 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which is celebrated on 17 June, will be ‘Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People.' UNCCD Executive Secretary Monique Barbut thanked China for offering to host the global observance event at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, highlighting the country's experience in “nursing degraded lands and man-made deserts back to health.”

Event: G20 Green Finance Study Group Meeting #2 [viewed]

The second meeting of the Green Finance Study Group (GFSG) under the Group of 20 (G20) Chinese Presidency will take place on 22 March in London, UK. In 2016, the GFSG will work on identifying institutional and market barriers to green finance, and options for enhancing the ability of the financial system to mobilize private green investment. The GFSG will prepare a synthesis report on related findings for the third G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in 2016, scheduled to take place from 23-24 July 2016, in Chendgu, China. The G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies. It includes the European Union (EU), which is represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank, and 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US.

Event: World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2016 [viewed]

This year's World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will take place under the slogan 'Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People'. The global observance event will take place in Beijing, China, and will be hosted by the State Forestry Administration of China. The event will showcase China's new development strategy, 'The Belt and Road,' which aims to strengthen cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation, primarily in Eurasia. During the celebrations, China will launch the 'One Belt and One Road Joint Action to Combating Desertification Initiative' together with interested countries and stakeholders. WDCD 2016 activities will also seek to demonstrate how the target of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) can be a critical element for achieving other sustainable development as well as climate goals.
