AMCEN 14 Adopts Arusha Declaration on Africa's Post-Rio Strategy [viewed]

14 September 2012: African Environment Ministers and government ministers, at the conclusion of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), adopted the Arusha Declaration on Africa's Post Rio+20 Strategy for Sustainable Development - a compendium of decisions and programmes aiming to advance the sustainable development agenda in Africa.

UNEP Executive Director Commits to Increased Assistance to Africa at AMCEN [viewed]

UNEP12 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner addressed African ministers attending the 14th session of the African Ministerial Conference for the Environment (AMCEN), convening from 7-14 September 2012, in Arusha, Tanzania. Steiner underscored UNEP's commitment to assist African States in making the transition to a Green Economy, negotiating a new climate treaty, building awareness on chemicals and hazardous wastes, and improving the management of drylands.

UNEP, GEF Guidebook Outlines Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation in Building Sector [viewed]

August 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have published a guidebook on mitigation technologies and practices in the building sector, with examples of the use of solar energy, energy efficient building materials, and urban planning for storm water management.

World Bank Approves Loan for Greening Himachal Pradesh's Development Policy [viewed]

World Bank6 September 2012: The World Bank approved a US$100 million loan to support India's Himachal Pradesh (HP) State in moving towards a green growth path, through the protection of watersheds in the mountainous region and the development of sustainable hydropower. A second development policy loan is expected to follow, with funding from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).

Bhutan, UNDP-UNEP Hold Workshops on Green and Inclusive Development in Asia-Pacific [viewed]

9 August 2012: Bhutan hosted participants from eight Asia-Pacific countries in two high-level workshops addressing green and inclusive economics and development. In the keynote address, Bhutan's Minister of Labor and Human Resources, Lyonpo Dorji Wangdi, highlighted environmental resources as a critical asset for economic development and poverty reduction in developing countries.

Event: Second Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa [viewed]

The second Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-II) conference of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) provides a forum for dialogue and engagement with various stakeholders involved in climate and development in Africa. Convened under the theme "Climate and Development in Africa: Advancing knowledge, policy and practice," the conference is expected to provide a platform to: exchange knowledge and ideas to further the research, policy and practice; determine the strategic direction for the ClimDev-Africa programme; increase awareness and understanding of the current situation, including the state of policy, research and future needs for climate information; raise awareness on access and development of energy sources and their roles in development and economic transformation in Africa; and strengthen the preparedness of African negotiators ahead of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The ClimDev-Africa Programme is a joint initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

FAO, IFAD and WFP Call for Action to Avert Global Food Crisis [viewed]

4 September 2012: In response to increases in maize, wheat and soybean prices similar in magnitude to those seen during the 2007-2008 world food crisis, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have issued a joint statement calling for urgent action to avert global price shocks.

43rd Pacific Islands Forum Develops Leaders Communique [viewed]

PIFS30 August 2012: The 43rd Pacific Islands Forum convened in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, from 28-30 August 2012, under the theme of “Large Oceans Island States – the Pacific Challenge.” Issues discussed at the meeting included the outcomes of the recent UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), the Oceanscape initiative, climate change, and radioactive contaminants in the Marshall Islands. The 43rd PIF Communique includes the key commitments of Pacific Leaders.

Event: Introduction to a Green Economy: Concepts and Applications [viewed]

This e-learning course is being organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and will take place from 8 October to 30 November 2012. The course will focus on the different concepts and facets of the green economy, as well as on the challenges and opportunities for advancing low-carbon, resource efficient and socially-inclusive development.
