UNFCCC Secretariat Releases CDM Technology Transfer Report [viewed]

18 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a report titled “Analysis of Technology Transfer in CDM Projects,” which contains the results of a study analyzing the transfer of technology under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. The report contains an analysis of information on: technology transfer used in CDM projects; technology transfer by project type; technology transfer by host country; technology supplier versus buyer participants; the origin of the technology; technology transfer versus technology needs, as submitted by project participants in their project design documents; capital investment; and trend analysis/comparison from the 2007 study.

UN-REDD Programme Approves Funds [viewed]

Forests store CO2 helping alleviate climate change

18 March 2009: The UN-REDD Programme, an initiative on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), has approved US$18 million for activities in five pilot countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Programme is sponsored by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Development Programme, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The approved sum constitutes roughly one-third of available funding under the Programme, and will be dedicated to measures such as monitoring, stakeholder engagement, enhancement of non-carbon benefits, and strengthening of institutional capacity.

UNIDO to Support Production of Hydrogen-Fuelled Three-Wheel Vehicles in India [viewed]

13 March 2009: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of partners to provide financial and technical support for the building and operation of a fleet of 15 hydrogen-fuelled three-wheel vehicles in New Delhi, India. The agreement was reached by UNIDO's International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (ICHET), the UNIDO Regional Office for South Asia, and Indian partners, including: the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; Mahindra and Mahindra; and Air Products.

CDM Methodologies Panel Report and Annexes Released [viewed]

11 March 2009: The Panel on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) baseline and monitoring methodologies (CDM Meth Panel) has released the report and annexes of its 37th meeting, which convened from 2-6 March 2009, in Bonn, Germany. The report outlines the issues considered by the Panel, including: proposed new methodologies; requests for clarification on and revision to approved methodologies; issues of general guidance and tools; and schedule of meetings and rounds of submissions of proposed new methodologies.

Confronting Climate Change in the Arctic

13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.

13 March 2009: On the occasion of the 31st annual Lions Day at the UN, celebrated in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon explained that he will attend the G20 Summit in April in London, UK, where he would remind leaders of the developed world of the need to fulfill their promises to the most vulnerable people and for their stimulus packages to be “green” in order to help combat climate change by including investments in clean energy, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
