16 October 2008: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that
it is on schedule to complete the live connection of its International
Transaction Log (ITL) with the EU Community Independent Transaction Log (CITL)
and 26 EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) registries.
17 October 2008: Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), gave a presentation at a discussion entitled “Securing Asia's Energy Future” held by the Asia Society, in New York, US, on 16 October.
17 October 2008: Two sets of seven donor countries and seven potential recipient countries have been selected to serve on the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Trust Fund Committee and the Strategic Climate Fund (SCF) Trust Fund Committee, respectively, to oversee the decisions concerning investments and implementation of the recently created World Bank Climate Investment Funds (CIF).
17 October 2008: The Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Promoting Wood-Based Bioenergy Using Wood Residues and Waste, which was held from 14-17 October 2008, in Jakarta, Indonesia, was organized by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO).
14 October 2008: During the debate on international
cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space by the Fourth Committee (Special
Political and Decolonization) of the 63rd General Assembly, Ciro Arévalo Yepes,
Chairman of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, underscored the
role space technology could play in addressing climate change, food security
and health.
October 2008: The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and
Water Resources, Sultanate of Oman, and the Regional Centre on Urban Water
Management, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in cooperation with the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) and other partners, are organizing the International
Conference on Water Resources and Climate Change in the Middle East – North
Africa (MENA) Region, which will take place from 2-4 November 2008, Muscat,
Oman.
9 October 2008: At high-level meetings in Seoul, Republic of Korea, the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Noeleen Heyzer, discussed with the Republic of Korea's Prime Minister, Han Seung-soo, a partnership to implement a $200 million fund to support Asian developing countries to pursue a low-carbon development path.
9 October 2008: The UN University (UNU) is hosting the
International Conference on Environment, Forced Migration and Social
Vulnerability, which is taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 9-11 October 2008.
The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), UN Environment Programme
(UNEP), and International Organization for Migration (IOM) are among the
Conference's organizing partners. Participants have been asked to capture the
current state of research and debate on the issue, and to conclude with
recommendations for moving forward.
8 October 2008: The proposed agenda and annotations,
together with the draft work programme, for the 43rd meeting of the Executive
Board (EB43) of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) are now available on the
CDM website.
8 October 2008: The Division for Sustainable Development of
the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DSD/DESA) is organizing an
expert group meeting on “Climate Change and Sustainable Development: The Role
of Indicators.”
