Event: North America's Energy Future: Powering a Low-carbon Economy for 2030 and Beyond [viewed]

Organized by the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation's (CEC) Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC), this public forum will bring together experts to discuss, inter alia: progress made in fostering renewable electricity markets in Canada, Mexico and the US since the CEC's 2007 report on the subject, and its future through 2030; challenges and barriers affecting the use of renewable energy in North America; and how renewable energy projects can be promoted in remote communities.

Event: Eighth African Development Forum [viewed]

The eighth African Development Forum (ADF) is being held under the theme "Governing and Harnessing Natural Resources for Africa's Development". The ADF will provide a forum for the presentation of the latest research results, opinions and developments within the following six areas: knowledge base, human and institutional capacities; policy, legal and regulatory issues; economic issues; governance, human rights and social issues; participation and ownership of natural resources; and environmental, material stewardship and climate change. The ADF is an biennial event of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). It was created in 1999 and is a multi-stakeholder platform for debating, discussing and initiating concrete strategies for Africa's development. It is convened in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and other partners.

4th World Water Development Report Launched [viewed]

UNESCO12 March 2012: The 4th World Water Development Report (WWDR-4) was launched during the 6th World Water Forum. The report highlights the need to recognize water as a critical resource and underlines the global dimensions of its management, including climate change as a “central external driver” affecting water and demands for water use.

EU Council Adopts Conclusions on Rio+20 and Durban Climate Conference [viewed]

9 March 2012: The first Environment Council under the Danish Presidency concluded with the adoption of conclusions on follow-up to the Durban Climate Change Conference, and on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Other items debated included "A Roadmap to a low-carbon economy in 2050" and the Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE).

TckTckTck and Climate Nexus Launch Rio+20 Video Speech Contest [viewed]

7 March 2012: The TckTckTck campaign and Climate Nexus have launched a "Win A Date With History" online video speech contest, encouraging young people to submit short video speeches containing ideas for decisive action on sustainability. The winner will deliver their speech at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in June 2012.

UNCTAD Discussion Paper Questions Green Growth Potential to Reduce GHG Emissions [viewed]

UNCTADFebruary 2012: A discussion paper by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) argues that Green Growth based on enhanced material, resource and energy efficiency, as well as a drastic change in the energy mix will not lead to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction necessary to avoid dangerous climate change.
