7 May 2009: In a message delivered to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference on the Global Economic Crisis, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 7-8 May 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized the role that parliamentarians play in tackling some of the current global crises, including climate change, the financial crisis and the recent H1N1 flu outbreak.
30 April 2009: The 96th meeting of the International Fund for Agricultural Development's (IFAD) Executive Board, held 29-30 April in Rome, Italy, reviewed IFAD's procedures for environmental management and sustainable development and encouraged IFAD management to champion these rules at upcoming UNFCCC meetings.
4 May 2009: A study group to focus on information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the environment was created during the meeting of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG), which took place from 28-30 April 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland.
6 May 2009: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group has released the report of its 24th meeting, held from 29 April-1 May 2009 in Bonn, Germany. During the meeting, the Working Group considered, inter alia, requests for clarification of the application of approved baseline and monitoring methodologies, and draft new small-scale methodologies for A/R CDM project activities.
4 May 2009: The 17th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) opened on 4 May 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.
30 April 2009: Speaking on behalf of Abdoulie Janneh, UN Economic Commission for African (UNECA) Executive Secretary, Josué Dioné, Director of the Food Security and Sustainable Development Division of the UNECA, addressed the first session of the UNECA's Committee on Development Information, Science and Technology (CODIST-1), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 28 April-1 May 2009.
1 May 2009: “On the Frontlines of Climate Change,” an Internet forum launched by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has issued a call for project proposals. Funding, provided with the assistance of Denmark, will be dedicated to community-level projects showcasing local experiences with climate impacts and adaptation.
29 April 2009: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held a training workshop on environmental negotiations and climate change diplomacy in New York, US, from 29-30 April 2009. The workshop was organized as part of UNITAR's 2009 Negotiation Training Series, and was targeted mainly at delegates from developing countries, least developed countries and small island States (SIDS).
28 April 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the individual review of the greenhouse gas inventory submissions of Poland submitted in 2007 and 2008 (FCCC/ARR/2008/POL). The expert review team (ERT) finds the inventory to be generally in line with the Revised 1996 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, the IPCC good practice guidance and the IPCC good practice guidance for land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF).
April 2009: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), a research center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has published a working paper on challenges and perspectives for mainstreaming climate change into agricultural education. The working paper is an outcome of a symposium on climate change challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, which sought to identify recommendations for effective policy, institutions and capacity for addressing climate change in agricultural education.
