Event: First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport [viewed]

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

Event: Arab Water Week 2015 [viewed]

Arab Water Week 2015 will convene under the theme 'innovations and sustainable solutions for the water sector in the Arab region'. The meeting will address a variety of sub-themes, including, inter alia: the energy efficiency dilemma in water and wastewater utilities; social responsibility and water for marginalized people; water utilities adaptation to climate change, current status and future perspectives; integrated water resources management (IWRM) and good water governance in the Arab region; the Millennium Development Goal (MDG)+ initiative towards sustainable water resources management within the sustainable development goals (SDGs); benchmarking as a tool for optimizing water and wastewater operations; and water public action and awareness in a fast, changing world.

Event: Global Landscapes Forum [viewed]

The second Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will be convened at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC by the CIGAR Consortium's Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Peru. The Forum will focus on integrating the landscape approach into the post-2015 climate and development agendas. Themes will include food, water and energy; climate change; the green economy; and sustainable development. The programme will include a wide variety of sessions covering topics such as REDD+, climate-smart agriculture, fiscal and trade policy instruments, land restoration and forest economics. The event will also feature a debate on the future of food security in a changing climate.

WCDRR PrepCom1 Identifies Priorities for Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

UNISDR15 July 2014: The First Session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom1) of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) met to review the organizational and substantive preparations for the Conference, approve its programme of work, and propose its rules of procedure. Over 600 government representatives and experts attended the conference, with broadly converging views on how to address threats posed by disasters and climate change.

Event: UN Summit for Adoption of Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

The UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda was mandated by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2013 (Resolution 68/6). In consultations on organizational modalities for the Summit, Member States are considering holding the summit on 21-23 September 2015.

Event: Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) [viewed]

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

OWG Concludes Work, Submits SDG Proposal to UNGA [viewed]

OWG19 July 2014: The UN General Assembly's Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has concluded its work, adopting by acclamation a report containing 17 proposed SDGs and 169 targets. The proposal will be submitted to the UN General Assembly for consideration and action at its 68th session.

ILO Calls for Engagement of Labor Sector in Green Economy [viewed]

ilo-eu18 July 2014: At a Joint Meeting of EU Environment and Labor ministers, hosted by the Government of Italy, the International Labour Organization (ILO) urged the ministers to align their policies on sustainable development. ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said a deliberate shift to a greener economy could promote job creation and help mitigate climate change.

BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.
