GFFA 2016 Highlights Agriculture and Food Security for SDGs, Climate [viewed]

gffa16 January 2016: The 2016 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) resulted in a Communiqué from the agriculture ministers of 65 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The ministers call for ensuring food security for cities and rural areas through: sustainable, productive and profitable agriculture; efficient, reliable supply and value chains; and vibrant rural areas.

UNSG: 2016 Must See National Traction on SDGs, “Put the Last First” [viewed]

Conference Discusses the Role of Transport and Cities in Addressing Climate Change [viewed]

UN Secretary-General, Global Compact Call on Business to Advance Global Agreements [viewed]

Global Compact14 January 2016: The UN Global Compact (UNGC) Board underscored the role of the private sector and partnerships in advancing global challenges, particularly related to the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNSC 47 Reports Propose Additional Work on Indicators [viewed]

47unscJanuary 2016: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has released a series of reports in advance of the 47th session of the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC), including the report of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goals Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) (E/CN.3/2016/2), which lists the proposed global indicators agreed by the IAEG-SDGs.

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016 [viewed]

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is an Abu Dhabi government initiative to address the interconnected challenges affecting energy, water and sustainable development. The largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, ADSW encourages outcomes that pave the way toward sustainability, and provides the opportunity for dialogue and cooperation through policy dialogues, conferences, exhibitions and other events. ADSW 2016 is comprised of: an opening ceremony; the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), including a solar expo and sustainable transport zone; the International Water Summit; the EcoWaste exhibition; and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly. It also will also include the following events: Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy; IRENA Financial Times Debate; Egypt Energy Forum; Abu Dhabi Global Action Day; and the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirate's international awards for energy and sustainability pioneers.

Speakers during the opening event include: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and nine heads of states, including those from the Seychelles, Palau, Kosovo, Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco.

ADSW is being hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, and is expected to attract more than 33,000, with over 80 heads and ministers of state, and other participants from more than 170 countries.

Event: High-Level Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation Sendai Framework 2015-2030 (Americas) [viewed]

This meeting will discuss the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 and define regional priorities for its implementation in the Americas. Recommendations emanating from the meeting will provide the basis for further discussion and analysis with a broader range of stakeholders in the framework of the Regional Platform for DRR 2016. The meeting is being organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR AM).

Thailand Takes Over as G-77 Chair for 2016 [viewed]

G77logo12 January 2016: Thailand officially commenced its tenure as Chair of the Group of 77 (G-77), taking over from South Africa during a special ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York. Thailand announced the theme ‘From Vision to Action: Inclusive Partnership for Sustainable Development,' to be used as an underpinning principle during its chairmanship.

Event: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting [viewed]

The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting will take place under the theme, ‘Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution,' with the aim of building a shared understanding of current changes and shaping a collective future that places humans at the center. The "Fourth Industrial Revolution" refers to the creation of new capabilities and impacts on economic, political and social systems as a result of a fusion of technologies across the biological, digital and physical worlds. The WEF will discuss climate change, environment and resource scarcity, food security and agriculture, inclusive, sustainable growth and security, employment, skills and human capital, gender parity, and the future of the global financial system, among other current challenges. The Annual Meeting will bring together over 40 heads of state and government with 2,500 leaders from UN agencies, business and civil society.
