Stakeholder Participation

Event: Stakeholder Meeting to Develop an Action Plan on Forests and the Green Economy [viewed]

The Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing a meeting with stakeholders across the UNECE region (Western and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North America) to discuss the development of an action plan on forests and the green economy. Discussion will focus on: Sustainable Wood Consumption and Production; Low-carbon Forest Sector; Valuation of and Payments for Ecosystem Services; Monitoring and Governance; and Green Jobs. The action plan, once finalized, will be reviewed by the UNECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission at their joint session, scheduled from 10-14 October 2011 in Antalya, Turkey. It will then be presented as a regional sectoral example at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in June 2012.

15 April 2011: At its 60th meeting, the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) approved the new small-scale methodology “low greenhouse gas emitting water purification systems” and agreed to launch a call for public inputs to explore opportunities to further expand the usability of this methodology.

Humanitarian Aid Consortium Launches New Edition of Humanitarian Handbook [viewed]

14 April 2011: The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, has launched the revised edition of the UN-backed publication titled, "The Handbook: Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response." The handbook is produced by the Sphere Project, a consortium of humanitarian agencies.

12 April 2011: At a dialogue organized by Sustainlabour in Madrid, international trade unions met with the UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) and business and NGO representatives, to call for decisive and ambitious climate action in the lead-up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa (UNFCCC COP 17/CMP 7) at the end of 2011, and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in 2012.
