Event: Addis Ababa: Managing the Regional Risks of Climate Extremes and Disasters – Learning from the IPCC Special Report [viewed]

This event is part of a series of briefings that will seek to publicize the findings of the IPCC Special Report SREX to policy makers, practitioners and private sector audiences. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) prepared a Special Report titled "Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters for Advancing Climate Change Adaptation" (SREX), and launched the report's Summary for Policy Makers on 18 November 2011, with the full report released in hard copy in March 2012. To follow up on this report, the IPCC, the Overseas Development Institute, Norway's Climate and Pollution Agency, Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network are working with local counterparts to support a programme of regional outreach events. This event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is invitation only. Speakers will include IPCC authors and invited guests from the East African region.

PROFOR Brief Focuses on Benefit Sharing Arrangements for Forest-Dependent Communities [viewed]

April 2012: The multi-donor Program on Forests Partnership (PROFOR) has published a brief on benefits sharing arrangements in initiatives for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks). The brief focuses on how to identify beneficiaries when rights are unclear and how to transfer benefits.

New CDM Procedures Come into Effect [viewed]

30 April 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that, from 1 May 2012, it will begin receiving project-related submissions under the new Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project Cycle Procedure, and CDM project participants can request private telephone consultations to clarify issues identified during assessment under the new procedure.

International Polar Year 2012 Conference Discusses Moving from Knowledge to Action [viewed]

27 April 2012: The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference convened around the theme “From Knowledge to Action,” with discussions on a variety of issues related to Arctic issues. Panel sessions addressed, inter alia: Earth structure and geodynamics; polar ocean processes; permafrost; marine, territorial and freshwater polar ecosystems; and communicating polar science.

UNECE Workshop Focuses on Climate Change Impacts on Transboundary Basins [viewed]

UNECE26 April 2012: The Third Workshop on Water and Climate Change in Transboundary Basins, which addressed the theme "Making Adaptation Work," called attention to the expected impacts on climate change, including the higher risk of drought and floods, on shared transboundary basins. The event brought together over 140 participants to discuss conflict prevention and cooperation to address climate change adaptation at the transboundary level.

SPC Consults on Draft Pacific Policy Framework for REDD+ [viewed]

UNFCCC Releases Submissions on Research and Systematic Observation [viewed]

24 April 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released eight submissions from regional and international climate change research programmes and organizations containing updates on developments in research activities relevant to the needs of the Convention, including on the long-term global goal, and information on technical and scientific aspects of emissions and removals of all greenhouse gases (GHG) from coastal and marine ecosystems (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.3).

IEA Report to CEM says Clean Energy Progress not Ambitious Enough to Remain within 2 Degree Scenario [viewed]

IEA25 April 2012: The International Energy Agency has launched a report, titled “Tracking Clean Energy Progress,” at the third Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM). The report is an excerpt of the publication “Energy Technologies Perspectives 2012,” which is scheduled to be launched in June 2012.
