Rio Conventions Pavilion Highlights Synergies [viewed]

19 March 2012: On the margins of the the first round of “informal-informal” consultations on the zero draft of the outcome document for Rio+20, the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) organized a side-event highlighting the importance of the Rio Conventions Pavilion (Rio Pavilion) as a mechanism for emphasizing the synergies among the Rio Conventions.

UNFCCC Releases CC:iNet Report [viewed]

19 March 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report on the further development of CC:iNet (FCCC/SBI/2012/4). The climate change information network clearing house (CC:iNet) was launched in December 2010 to facilitate the implementation of the amended New Delhi work programme on Article 6 of the Convention (on education, training and public awareness).

Organizations Express Willingness to Host UNFCCC's Climate Technology Centre [viewed]

19 March 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that nine organizations have expressed their willingness to be the host of the UNFCCC's new Climate Technology Centre (CTC). The CTC, along with its Network, is the implementing arm of the UNFCCC's Technology Mechanism, established at the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, in 2010.

Event: Third Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Third Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM3) will bring together over 20 participating countries to discuss progress made by the 11 CEM clean energy initiatives, increased intergovernmental cooperation, and public-private partnerships in support of clean energy deployment. The CEM is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The 23 governments participating in CEM initiatives are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.

6th World Water Forum Adopts Marseille Declaration [viewed]

17 March 2012: The 6th World Water Forum, which was organized around the theme “Time for Solutions,” concluded with adoption of the Marseille Ministerial Declaration. Key issues addressed during the Forum included: access to drinking water and sanitation; contributions to a green economy; resilience and adaptation to climate change; and governance and financing.

Event: Fourth International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification: Implementing Rio+20 for Drylands and Desertification [viewed]

The Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, along with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Israeli Foreign Ministry, are orgainzing the Fourth International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification (DDD). This conference will gather scientists, field workers, industry representatives, government workers, civil society organizations, international development aid agencies and other stakeholders from over 60 countries to discuss issues related to land degradation in the drylands, and their sustainable use and development. The 2012 conference will focus on the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and will consider the science required for implementing the UNCSD's recommendations relevant to drylands and desertification. Local case studies will be highlighted alongside success stories from around the world with an emphasis on indicators of progress. Additional sessions will be held considering a broad range of topics associated with sustainable living in the drylands and the means to address desertification, as well as achieving the target of zero net rate of land degradation. Registration opens on 1 April and the abstract submission deadline is 17 June.

UN-HABITAT, EU Launch Low-Emission City Growth Initiative [viewed]

9 March 2012: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the European Commission (EC) have launched a project, titled "Promoting Low Emission Urban Development Strategies in Emerging Economy Countries" (URBAN-LEDS), which aims to support cities' efforts in mitigating climate change.

Event: UNFCCC Expert Meeting on Assessing the Risk of Loss and Damage Associated with the Adverse Effects of Climate Change [viewed]

The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing this expert meeting to address issues related to assessing the risk of loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change. The meeting will consider inputs from relevant stakeholders and draw on expertise within and outside the Convention, with the aim of building a knowledge base for the discussion of a range of approaches to address loss and damage.
