CARIAA Updates on Adaptation Projects in Africa and Asia [viewed]

cariaaApril 2015: The Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) has provided an update on a common research programme on climate change adaptation that is carried out by four consortia. The four consortia are: Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR); Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation (DECCMA); Himalayan Adaptation, Water, and Resilience (HI-AWARE); and Pathways to Resilience in Semi-Arid Economies (PRISE).

Global Soil Week 2015: Healthy Soils and Land Justice Underpin Transformation to Sustainability [viewed]

global_soil_week24 April 2015: “A transformation towards sustainable soil management is possible if all actors are integrated in the search for solutions.” This statement was among concluding remarks made by Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and Chair of the Third Global Soil Week. Töpfer welcomed the contribution of the Secretariats of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), noting “this sends a strong signal” of the growing shift from silos towards "a systems approach” in addressing multiple agendas.

Event: EU Sustainable Energy Week 2015 [viewed]

EU Sustainable Energy Week will bring together public authorities, energy agencies, research organizations, NGOs, businesses and private consumers to share best practices and ideas on secure, clean and efficient energy. The week will consist of: the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards in the categories of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and cities, communities and regions; Sustainable Energy Days throughout June; and the 2015 EU Sustainable Energy Week Policy Conference from 16-18 June. The Policy Conference will bring together energy experts, policymakers, civil society representatives and the members of the media. Sessions will cover, inter alia, public-private partnerships as a tool to accelerate energy innovation; an energy efficiency investment framework; the potential of the building and heating and cooling sectors; and women in renewable energy.

UNFCCC's NAZCA Portal Features Over 500 City Actions [viewed]

nazca22 April 2015: To coincide with Earth Day, over 500 new city actions have been added to the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal, which was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. NAZCA, a UNFCCC-hosted website, showcases actions of non-state actors, including municipalities, regions and investors, and aims to help build momentum for a global climate agreement in Paris in December 2015. Currently, 400 cities, 71 subnational regions and 264 companies are taking 1514 climate-related actions listed on the NAZCA portal.

ECOSOC Begins Meeting with BWIs on Post-2015, FfD [viewed]

ECOSOC20 April 2015: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) began its annual special high-level meeting with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), with a focus on the theme of ‘Coherence, coordination and cooperation in the context of financing for sustainable development and the post-2015 development agenda.' The meeting brought representatives of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) together with UN Member States to discuss post-2015 development and the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3).

Future of Energy Summit Explores Transformation of Utilities [viewed]

the_future_of_the_energy_summit15 April 2015: The Future of Energy Summit 2015 met under the theme ‘Opportunities for Transformation,' and covered key areas for the future of utilities, namely power generation, grids, connected homes and vehicles. Over 1000 attendees and 140 speakers participated in 45 sessions, which convened under the daily themes of: innovation; political, regulatory and business decisions; and investment.

Event: Climate Change Innovation Camp [viewed]

Ten finalist teams that answered a call for innovative solutions to climate change under a UN Development Programme (UNDP) nationwide campaign in the former Yugoslav Republic (fYR) of Macedonia will participate in a three-day Climate Change Innovation Camp. The finalists were selected from 130 submissions to the campaign, which was launched in December 2014 by UNDP in fYR Macedonia. During the Camp, the finalists will receive expert technical advice to develop their proposals further and compete for a US$10,000 prize to develop their proposals into prototypes. Finalists have put forward ideas involving: bikes and shoes to charge electronics; 'Eco Taxis'; solar collectors and billboards; solar cooling devices; re-using shower water for flushing toilets; using smartphones to create reminders for shutting off lights and optimizing heating and cooling; a smart app for carpooling; promotion of alternative means of transport; 'climate cafés'; and green roofs and facades.

Event: Second Gathering of the Road to Paris Partners [viewed]

As part of Climate Week Paris 2015, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) will gather for their second meeting as partners of the Road to Paris initiative. A high-level session will take place the following morning, on 20 May 2015. In support of a transition to a low-carbon economy, the Road to Paris initiative aims to create business-oriented technology roadmaps, analyze barriers, identify financial and political solutions, as well as public-private partnership (PPP) opportunities, and strengthen business and government dialogue to create enabling frameworks for investment in the lead-up to the Paris Climate Change Conference and beyond.
