Global Investors Urge Strong Climate Change Action Ahead of Summit [viewed]

UNEP FI18 September 2014: Nearly 350 global institutional investors, responsible for managing over US$24 trillion in assets, released a statement ahead of the UN Climate Change Summit, urging Heads of State to take strong action on climate change. In the Global Investor Statement on Climate Change, investors call on governments to: set a stable and reliable price on carbon that helps redirect investment commensurate with the scale of the climate challenge; develop plans to phase out fossil fuel subsidies; and agree on an ambitious climate deal in 2015.

Event: 2015 Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting [viewed]

This Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting will bring together ministers of the Arctic States and high-level representatives of the indigenous Permanent Participant organizations to set the Council's objectives for the next two years. The 2015 Ministerial Meeting will mark the conclusion of Canada's and the beginning of the United States' chairmanship, which will last from 2015-2017. The April 2015 meeting will be preceded by an event in Ottawa, Canada, on 23 April 2015 to showcase the Council's accomplishments during Canada's chairmanship.

Event: International Meeting of the Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Community of Practice [viewed]

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Regional Gateway for Technology Transfer and Climate Change Action in Latin America and the Caribbean (REGATTA) and the facilitator of REGATTA's Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Community of Practice, Practical Action Latin America, are co-organizing this meeting of members of the EbA Community of Practice to strengthen the network, discuss regional experiences in EbA and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Event: Data Playground: Showcasing Data for the Public Good at the UN [viewed]

This event will showcase the UN's commitment to the data revolution and the potential and impact of such a revolution. The UN Millennium Campaign (UNMC) and Microsoft will launch an interactive visualization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to map progress towards the goals. The UN Secretary-General's Climate Change Support Team and UN Global Pulse will present the winners of the Big Data Climate Challenge, which aims to identify and highlight data-driven evidence on the economic dimensions of climate change. The event will also discuss the results of the MY World survey.

Event: Toward a Vibrant, Low Carbon Economy [viewed]

This event, which marks the opening of the Climate Week NYC, will convene CEOs from major global companies, heads of sub-national governments and civil society leaders to establish a shared vision for a low-carbon economy, including the action and leadership required for reaching it. The focus will be on key climate themes such as, finance, security and innovation, and the event will also serve to highlight leadership by businesses and governments. Planned sessions cover topics, including: a leaders' vision for a low-carbon economy; catalyzing action; health; ambitious actions by companies and at sub-national level; and building momentum toward Paris and beyond. The full-day event is co-convened by the Climate Group and CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), and is by invitation only.

Adaptation Committee Workshop Supports Adaptation Monitoring and Evaluation [viewed]

UNFCCC11 September 2013: The workshop on the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation, which was organized by the Adaptation Committee, sought to identify recommendations and guidance to be considered by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) with a view to providing technical support and guidance to Parties in order to facilitate enhanced implementation of adaptation actions.

CBD Secretariat Issues Notification on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

CBD17 September 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification on incorporating disaster risk reduction (DRR) into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in advance of the adoption of a post-2015 framework for DRR that will succeed the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 (HFA). The document (SCBD/SAM/DC/DCo/VA/83873) highlights opportunities "to raise awareness of the importance of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets to achieving DRR objectives."

Event: IV EUROCLIMA Seminar [viewed]

The fourth meeting of the EUROCLIMA Programme participants, which represents their first meeting since the Programme entered Phase II, will bring together EUROCLIMA national focal points, EU officials, and experts from associated organizations, namely the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The first day will be devoted to interaction with the Iberoamerican Network of Climate Change Offices (RIOCC), which is holding its 11th annual meeting in Lima, Peru, from 30 September-1 October. The second day will look at EUROCLIMA in the context of the EU's recently-approved Indicative Cooperation Programme for Latin America for 2014-2020, preparations for COP 20, plans for EUROCLIMA in the 2014-2016 period, and presentations on EUROCLIMA work at the national level. The third day will examine mainstreaming climate change into development policy, strategic mitigation and adaptation measures, and promoting capacity building and knowledge interchange.

OECD, Bloomberg Philanthropies Urge Empowering Cities for Climate Action [viewed]

oecd-bloomberg17 September 2014: Choices made around infrastructure in cities could help avoid the worst impacts of climate change, according to a report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The report, titled ‘Cities and Climate Change: National Governments Enabling Local Action,' examines how enabling policy frameworks at the national level can support critical climate action in cities.
