Event: 2016 Energy Efficiency Global Forum [viewed]

In 2016, EE Global will explore how utilities, regulators, legislators and companies are incorporating cost-effective energy efficiency measures into their business to help meet increasing demand. Attendees will also engage in networking, partnership building, and action inspiring energy efficiency discourse while discussing how energy efficiency can be made into a sustainable and scalable business strategy. Speakers will include Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA), and Rachel Kyte, CEO, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All).

Event: Sixth Annual WAVES Partnership Meeting [viewed]

The sixth annual meeting of the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) partnership will bring together WAVES countries, UN agencies, donors, civil society organizations, and other institutions supporting natural capital accounting (NCA). WAVES countries will showcase results from their work on constructing water, forest, minerals and ecosystem accounts. The meeting will provide the opportunity for discussions on how to move from having accounts to using them in policy and decision making. The meeting will include a panel discussion on how NCA can support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on climate change, and participants will hear more on WAVES+, the next phase of the partnership. WAVES is a World Bank-led partnership that aims to promote sustainable development by ensuring that natural resources accounting is mainstreamed in development planning and national economic accounting.

Conference Calls on Governments to "Act Now" on SDGs, Paris Agreement [viewed]

sdgs_germany5 May 2016: A conference on 'Jump-starting the SDGs in Germany: Natural Resources and Sustainable Consumption and Production' addressed the challenges and opportunities of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Germany and worldwide. It focused on natural resources and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns, taking into consideration Germany's role as a major consumer of natural resources in a globalized world. Participants also focused on the potential role of partnerships in supporting effective implementation of the SDGs.

Event: Dialogue for Climate Action [viewed]

This Dialogue, which is organized by the World Bank Group, will bring together businesses, governments and civil society to discuss policies that promote climate-friendly actions. The aim of the Dialogue is to determine how best to engage industries and others in order to stimulate climate-efficient industries and improve sector competitiveness, as well as ensure greater alignment and cooperation between the private sector and national goals. The conference will also officially launch the 'Vienna Principles for Dialogue on Climate Action,' which were developed by the World Bank Group and partners to help foster dialogues among the public and private sectors through a common standard/framework to improve the ability of companies to play an active role in designing policies and initiatives that tackle climate change. The World Bank publication 'A Greener Path to Competitiveness' will also be launched during the Dialogue.

Event: GACSA Annual Forum: Climate-Smart Agriculture in Action [viewed]

The Annual Forum of the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture (GACSA), which is meeting under the theme 'CSA in Action,' will provide the opportunity for participants to share solutions, discuss challenges and build partnerships on CSA. The event will include sessions on: GACSA country case studies (Costa Rica, France, Ireland, Malawi, Tanzania and Viet Nam); climate finance and investment; CSA knowledge in action; regional CSA alliances; and future opportunities for scaling up CSA. The GACSA Action Groups on knowledge, enabling environment and investment will also meet, as will the GACSA Strategic Committee. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the agricultural cooperative 'La Sonnina'. GACSA was launched in 2014 at the UN Climate Summit, and is a voluntary alliance of partners addressing the challenges facing food security and agriculture under a changing climate. The GACSA Facilitation Unit is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Urban Resilience, DRR Enter the Limelight; Potentially Irreversible Harm Exposed [viewed]

adaptation_loss_damage 4 May 2016: The first target under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) is to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries. Much of the news on adaptation and loss and damage coming out of the month of April contributed to the implementation of this target, including projects promoting climate resilience in urban and rural settings, and resilience in the field of agriculture.

CSOs Make Recommendations for HLPF, Reflect on National Reviews, Climate Synergies, Wetlands, FfD Forum [viewed]

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)3 May 2016: A group of NGOs made recommendations for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and a multi-level review system. Other recent contributions from civil society organizations and researchers include: the results of Together 2030's Perceptions Survey; a brief on the synergies between development goals and climate action; a report on wetlands and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and a critique of the inaugural UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financing for Development (FfD) follow-up (FfD Forum).

FAO, Mountain Partnership to Launch Mountain Funding Facility [viewed]

Event: Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) (SDEP2) [viewed]

The Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) will be hosted jointly by the Italian Government, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the European Union Commission (EC). The two day Forum will be split into day one, 16 May being a technical thematic stakeholder day deepening on Energy Access, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Energy Security, and day two, 17 May will be dedicated to high level delegates and stakeholders. The Forum will build on the First Stakeholder meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012. It envisages participation of African and European Ministers, AU and EU Commissioners, and more than 300 other high-level participants representing policy-makers, regional institutions, international organisations, the banking & finance industry, the private sector, academia, the civil society and the media. The conference is expected to result in an Africa-EU Energy Stakeholder Forum Communiqué, launch a “Mapping of Initiatives and Programmes in Africa Report”, release of an “Intermediate AEEP Status Report”, and develop a stakeholders' call-for-action.

175 Parties Sign Paris Agreement, 15 Ratify Agreement on Earth Day [viewed]

iisdrs_paris_agreement22 April 2016: During the High-Level Signature Ceremony for the Paris Agreement on Climate Change held at the UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 22 April 2016, 175 Parties to the UNFCCC signed the Paris Agreement (174 countries and the EU), the largest ever number of first-day signatures to an international agreement. Of the 175 Parties that participated in the ceremony, 15 States deposited instruments of ratification. The signature ceremony was preceded, on 21 April, by the High-Level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which highlighted the interlinkages among the actions necessary to address climate change and foster sustainable development, and a briefing on forest conservation and restoration that discussed the implications of the formal signing of the Paris Agreement.
