Event: Climate Summit of the Americas [viewed]

The Government of Ontario is hosting a Climate Summit of the Americas to: develop and deliver a common statement on commitments by subnational governments to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; develop a vision agreed by government, business and environmental leaders for climate action through GHG reductions and low-carbon market mechanisms, including broader adoption of carbon pricing; identify opportunities for collaboration that will result in reduced emissions; and facilitate continued dialogue and strengthen cooperation among subnational pan-American governments leading up to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France. Representatives from pan-American jurisdictions, environmental groups and industry are expected to attend the Summit.

African Workshop Builds Capacity on National GHG Inventories [viewed]

MRV27 March 2015: The Third African Regional Workshop, titled ‘Technical Training on National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories and Developing GHG Reporting Programmes' and hosted by the International Partnership on Mitigation and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), brought together participants from Angola, Egypt, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

ECOSOC Hosts Integration Segment on Employment and Decent Work [viewed]

ECOSOC1 April 2015: The 2015 Integration Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) addressed the theme of 'Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all.' Bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, in dialogue with UN Member States and civil society representatives, the Segment examined policy recommendations for decent work and employment, and how these issues fit in with ongoing discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and other UN processes.

European Mayors to Cooperate on Climate Change [viewed]

europeans_mayors26 March 2015: Representatives from 30 European capitals and major cities met to express and formalize their commitment to address climate change, emphasizing the role major urban centers play in this field. The meeting, which took place on 26 March 2015, in Paris, France, came in advance of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris in December 2015. French President Francois Hollande addressed the European mayors, stating that major cities must be “pioneers” in terms of low-emission practices.

ITPGR Benefit-Sharing Fund Supports Community Seed Network in Guatemala [viewed]

ITPGRMarch 2015: With support from the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), a project implemented by the Universidad del Valle in Guatemala and focusing on the documentation and conservation of genetic diversity of maize and beans has strengthened the local association of farmers and established a local seed network. The project started with the establishment of a local network to assess storage practices, the availability of seed and sowing practices, as well as the information on and perception of the negative impacts of climate change.

Event: Scaling Up Finance for Climate Action: A Public-Private Dialogue [viewed]

This event will focus on what it will take to close the climate finance gap in the lead-up to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC. World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and European Investment Bank (EIB) President Werner Hoyer will lead the discussion with policy makers, international financial institutions (IFIs), civil society and the private sector, focusing on ways to deliver the funds needed to transition to a low-carbon, resilient economy. Other speakers will include Rachel Kyte, World Bank Group Vice President and Climate Change Special Envoy, and Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs.

UNESCO-IHP Highlights Climate Change Impacts on Water Security [viewed]

Norden Formulates Recommendations on Assessment and Review of INDCs [viewed]

Nordic Council Logo23 March 2015: A study published by the Nordic Council of Ministers (Norden) identifies a variety of options for designing and organizing the assessment and review of intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) under a 2015 climate change agreement. It proposes an ex ante assessment and review process for INDCs, complemented by assessments by observer organizations and informal discussions among parties. In addition, it recommends a periodic review of collective ambition to assess environmental effectiveness.
