UNIDO Continues Technical Training on Environmental Projects for CIS Countries [viewed]

UNIDO17 October 2014: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has organized a capacity building workshop for countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on mitigating global environmental problems. The event provided 25 participants from the Ministries of Environment, Energy and Ecology of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Ukraine with tools to enhance the quality of project submissions to the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

World Bank Organizes “Boot Camp” for Green Businesses in Viet Nam [viewed]

World Bank17 October 2014: The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have created a course to support Vietnamese businesses in developing sustainable energy-related solutions and adaptation technologies in the transport, agricultural and water sectors. The ‘Clean Tech Bootcamp,' which consisted of lectures and workshops for 24 small- and medium-size clean-technology start-up companies, will be proceeded with support from a local business hub, to be established in the second half of 2014.

Event: 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS 2015) [viewed]

The 15th edition of the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS 2015) will focus on ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Dealing with Climate Change'. The DSDS, organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), is an international platform to facilitate the exchange of knowledge on all sustainable development-related issues. The event regularly brings together Heads of State and Government, thought leaders, policy makers and representatives of industry and academia. The DSDS has been held annually since 2001, and over the past 14 years, the Summit has hosted 37 current and former Heads of State, as well as ministers from over 50 countries. The Summit will be preceded by a high-level corporate dialogue on 4 February 2015.

Event: Second International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC 2014) [viewed]

The Second International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC 2014) will explore solutions for energy saving and production in developing countries, including in the areas of: renewable energy resources; renewable energy conversion; energy storage; energy management, saving and efficiency; renewable energy-relevant policies and regulation in developing countries; technologies for rural energy service provision; and regional and international support programs for renewable energy in developing countries. A joint event on 'Appropriate Technologies and Mechanisms for Energy Services in Arab Rural Areas' will be organized by the UN Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on 25 November.

Event: REN21 Renewables Academy 2014 [viewed]

The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) Academy 2014, organized from 10-12 November in Bonn, Germany, will take stock of renewable energy developments over the past decade and explore ways to further advance the global energy transition with renewables. The event will convene over plenary, lunch and coffee networking, and parallel thematic sessions. Topics on the agenda include: renewable energy policy frameworks; power sector transformation; fossil fuel subsidy reform; renewables heating and cooling; distributed renewable energy; working with media; data for decision-making; and pathways towards 100% renewable energy and the role of the consumer.

Event: 5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management [viewed]

The 5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM 2014) will meet under the theme ‘Building Disaster Resilient Communities'. The conference aims to bridge gaps and promote science-based solutions to empower local communities to advance disaster reduction, adapt to climate change and promote sustainable development. It also intends to: address opportunities for action through contributions from the areas of disaster science, technology, policy and practice; and stimulate a “next generation of ideas and actions” for disaster reduction. Conference themes will address cross-cutting issues, such as: disaster risk management, sustainable development, resilience building, vulnerability reduction, risk assessment and governance, risk financing, living with uncertainty, transformative processes, cultural recognition and change, poverty reduction, wellbeing, climate change adaptation, crisis communication and communities of practice. Conference participants will reflect on how theory, method and implementation presented by these processes can help to build disaster resilient communities. More specifically, the conference will address: building disaster resilient societies; integrating climate change and development goals; resilient cities, including case studies and best practices; creating an enabling environment to achieve resilience; emerging tools for integrated disaster management; risks and critical infrastructure protection; risk governance frameworks for resilient communities; and strategies for long-term, post-disaster mitigation measures.

UN Spotlights Role of Rural Women in Climate, SDGs [viewed]

United Nations15 October 2014: This year's International Day of Rural Women emphasized that rural women are critical for achieving the transformational economic, environmental and social changes required for sustainable development. In a statement marking the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said rural women are essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a universal climate agreement, and urged addressing the discrimination and deprivation that rural women suffer, including lack of access to land, markets, finance, social protection and services.

CTCN Advisory Board Discusses LDC Request Incubator, Budget and CTN Expansion [viewed]

ctcn10 October 2014: At its fourth meeting, the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) Advisory Board expressed its full support for a Least-Developed Country (LDC) request incubator programme to recognize the specific needs of LDCs and to assist them in taking full advantage of the CTCN's resources. Board members also discussed increasing collaboration between CTCN and financial institutions, determined that the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and CTCN will finalize the bodies' joint 2014 report, and heard a statement from the presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

Event: Workshop on Self-Consumption of Renewables: The Role of Storage in Revolutionising Grid Infrastructure [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), will examine ways for battery storage technologies to transform grid infrastructure and support on-site renewable electricity generation by consumers. The event will also seek to identify best practices, regulatory challenges and lessons to be highlighted in a forthcoming IRENA technology roadmap for electricity storage. The workshop will have a maximum number of 30 participants, comprising policymakers, industry representatives and academics, among others, who will also receive complimentary access to the 'Energy Storage Summit' held on 6 November, in Tokyo, Japan. The event is part of a series of workshops, the first one of which, titled 'International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation,' was organized on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany. The third workshop in the series, on 'Supporting Small- and Large-scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage,' will take place on 3 December in New Delhi, India.
