UN Global Compact Summit Calls for Business Leadership on SDGs [viewed]

Globalcompact23 June 2016: Participants at the UN Global Compact's 2016 Leaders Summit discussed how to reach a new era of sustainability with responsible business practices, innovation, targeted investment and transformative partnerships. The Compact presented its priorities for the next five years, which include impact reporting and partnerships between the UN and business.

High Level Forum Agrees on Actions to Increase Urban Resilience [viewed]

UNISDR17 June 2016: Ministers, government officials, mayors and UN representatives have agreed on actions that will make cities more resilient against disasters. The High Level Forum on 'Implementing the Sendai Framework For Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the Local Level' marked the first time that mayors and representatives of municipalities came together to discuss how to implement the Framework. The meeting resulted in an outcome document titled 'The Florence Way Forward,' which recognizes the importance of coherence at the local level to complement overall implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Event: 2016 Business and Climate Summit [viewed]

This Summit will bring together leaders from business, government and finance to develop a roadmap for how business, in the short, medium and long term, can take advantage of a swift transition to the net zero carbon economy. Day one will focus on implementing the Paris Agreement, and sessions will address, inter alia: what the Paris Agreement means for business; how business can bend the curve below 2°C above pre-industrial levels; the energy transition and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) (ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and clean energy) and climate goals; the role of business in achieving climate-positive land use in agriculture and forestry; decarbonizing transport; doubling global real estate in a 2°C world; and accelerating the business transition to the circular economy. Day 2 will focus in finance, innovation and policy for the low carbon transition, and include session on, inter alia: financing the low carbon economy; risk disclosure; achieving climate goals with the right carbon pricing mechanisms; innovation, collaboration and leadership for business in a post-Paris world; the role and responsibility of creative industries on climate action; and climate and trade. The Summit is being convened by The Climate Group and We Mean Business, and supported by, among others, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the UN Global Compact.

Event: First Alliances and Coalitions Global Forum [viewed]

The Forum is being organized by the incoming Moroccan Presidency of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) in collaboration with the French Presidency of COP 21, the UN Secretary-General, the UNFCCC and Peru. The Forum's aim is to lay the groundwork for the organization of the high-level event on climate action, scheduled to take place during COP 22 in Marrakesh, Morocco. It will also provide the opportunity for: the strengthening of coordination of climate action and encourage new voluntary initiatives; coalitions to discuss their implementation and plans for Marrakesh, and possible cooperation and synergies; the high-level champions to showcase their vision and expectations to maintain action and strengthen voluntary initiatives to accelerate the pathway from 2 °C to 1.5 °C. Parties and non-governmental stakeholders will also discuss ways to: strengthen the links between national action plans and voluntary initiatives, as well as the organization of the voluntary initiatives themselves; improve access to data; and share good practices. Key themes for discussion include: the strengthening of initiatives and means of implementation: the link between voluntary initiatives, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); credibility and a reporting system; the high-level event on climate action in Marrakesh; organizational support to maintain the dynamics of voluntary action. An aide-memoire capturing the discussions will be produced and published after the forum.

Oslo REDD Exchange Discusses Implementation, Cross-Cutting Themes [viewed]

NORAD16 June 2016: The Oslo REDD Exchange 2016 shared ideas, experiences and perspectives among professionals and leaders working on reducing deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+). Discussions focused on REDD+ implementation at national and subnational levels in light of the Paris Agreement, and cross-cutting themes, including on financing options, corporate supply chain commitments, indigenous peoples and monitoring technologies.

Event: International Coral Reef Initiative General Assembly [viewed]

This meeting of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) will address the degradation of coral reefs and related ecosystems around the world, including discussion of the status of coral reefs; the impacts of climate change on coral reefs; coral bleaching; and initiatives in the Indian Ocean region. The event marks the first meeting since France and Madagascar replaced Japan and Thailand as co-chairs of the ICRI Secretariat, on 1 June 2016. The event is expected to bring together governments, international organizations, scientific bodies and civil society.

Event: Workshop on Business-to-Business Energy Efficiency Networks [viewed]

Following the 2015 Hamburg Group of 7 (G7) Initiative for Sustainable Energy Security, the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) will jointly host a full-day workshop on business-to-business Energy Efficiency Networks (EENs) on 15 September 2016, in Berlin, Germany. The event will encourage participants to exchange and work towards best practices and success factors of EENs as an effective policy to stimulate energy efficiency. The outcomes of this workshop will lead to concrete tools and recommendations for the G7 and beyond. In addition, the workshop will provide a platform for dialogue between policy makers, network participants, and interested companies and experts. The workshop will take place back-to-back with the 2016 Industrial Efficiency conference.

LAC Countries Adopt Guidelines for Regional DRR Action Plan [viewed]

sendai_americas9 June 2016: Countries in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) have agreed on guidelines for developing a regional action plan that will encourage countries and communities to reduce disaster risk and potential losses. The guidelines were discussed during the First Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 in the Americas. The conference was the first opportunity for the region to discuss how to implement the Sendai Framework and illustrated the region's commitment to strengthening disaster risk governance.

Food Loss and Waste Accounting Standard Released [viewed]

food_and_waste6 June 2016: The Food Loss and Waste (FLW) Protocol, an international multi-stakeholder partnership, has released version 1.0 of the Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting Standard (FLW Standard) providing requirements and guidance for quantifying and reporting on the amount of food lost in the food supply chain. The report aims to enable countries, cities, companies and other entities to develop inventories of FLW and inform policy making, target setting and the development of strategies reduce FLW.

Climate Champions Outline Global Climate Action Roadmap [viewed]

UNFCCC7 June 2016: Climate Champions Laurence Tubiana, French Ambassador for Climate Change, and Hakima El Haité, Minister Delegate in charge of the Environment to the Ministry of Energy, Mines, Water and the Environment of Morocco, have released a global climate action agenda to boost cooperative action among governments, cities, businesses, investors and citizens to reduce emissions and help vulnerable countries adapt to climate impacts.
