Event: 2016 GEF ECW for the Southern Africa Constituency [viewed]

Expanded constituency workshops (ECW) aim to keep Global Environment Facility (GEF) national focal points, convention focal points and other key stakeholders, including civil society, abreast of GEF strategies, policies and procedures and to encourage coordination. They provide an opportunity for focal points to meet with their counterparts from other countries in the region and GEF partners to review policies and procedures and share lessons and experiences from the development and implementation of GEF projects and their integration into national policy frameworks.

Event: Resilient Cities 2016: 7th Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation [viewed]

This Forum, which is expected to bring together together over 400 experts and practitioners, will focus on a range of issues related to urban resilience and climate change adaptation, including inclusive resilience strategies, financing the resilient city, measuring and monitoring progress, resilience and adaptation planning, governance and collaboration, resource management, and resilient infrastructure. Participants will be able to network, build new partnerships, and exchange ideas and best practices. Participants will include: elected officials, including mayors; academics, researchers and students; private sector and NGO representatives; urban and regional planners; water and sanitation specialists; civil engineers; financial institution representatives; disaster risk and emergency managers; and climate change and adaptation experts. The Forum, which is meeting for the seventh year, is organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and co-hosted with the City of Bonn, Germany. Resilient Cities focuses on solutions for local governments, including cities and small island states.

WMO Reports on Second Iteration of METAGRI Operational Project [viewed]

WMO6 January 2016: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported some of the main outcomes from the four-year METAGRI Operational Project. During this second iteration of the Project, which ran from 2012-2015 in 17 West African countries, over 10,600 farmers took part in 260 roving seminars aimed at helping them access and use meteorological tools and information. WMO also announced that over 4,500 rain gauges were distributed, along with training on basic weather principles and observation.

Malawi, First African Country to Undergo DRR Peer Review [viewed]

UNISDR6 January 2016: In December 2015, specialists from Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe conducted a ten-day assessment of Malawi's disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies and actions, launching a process that will conclude in the coming months with Africa's first DRR peer review report.

CDKN Launches Digital Book on Mainstreaming Climate Compatible Development [viewed]

CDKNDecember 2015: The Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) has launched a digital book, titled 'Mainstreaming Climate Compatible Development,' which provides insights and lessons learned from practical experience in increasing climate resilience in developing countries. The book aims to inform and support decision makers, development planners and practitioners working to address climate change by sharing practical approaches to address key challenges of climate compatible development.

Event: World Meteorological Day [viewed]

World Meteorological Day has, since 1961, commemorated the entry into force of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which occurred on 23 March 1950. It also celebrates the important contribution that National Meteorological and Hydrological Services make to the safety and well-being of society. This year's theme, 'Hotter, drier, wetter. Face the Future,' was chosen to illustrate the reality of climate change. It highlights that, without urgent action to cut emissions, the trend of increasing temperatures and the frequency and intensity of extreme events will accelerate. A 2016 calendar with the same theme is also available for download, and includes photographs from around the world based on a WMO Facebook competition.

Event: Disaster Relief Asia [viewed]

This conference and exhibition will address the need for governments and international agencies to implement appropriate warning systems and response procedures to deal with the increasing number of disasters in Asia. It will explore different areas of disasters, including: search and rescue operations and cooperation among agencies; airlift support; humanitarian aid and planning for displaced civilians; and future warning systems under development for different disasters. The conference will also look at recent natural catastrophes in Asia and evaluate the subsequent response and humanitarian efforts. This will be the inaugural Disaster Relief Asia conference and is being hosted by Intelligence-Sec Limited.

UNGA Agrees on Inclusive Participation at Habitat III [viewed]

hiii23 December 2015: The Third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) will be “the most inclusive [Conference] ever organized by the UN,” according to the Conference secretariat, following the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) adoption of the modalities of work for Habitat III. The text approves rules of procedure for the Conference and arrangements for accreditation and participation of major groups and other stakeholders, including recognition of the participation of local authorities. The Assembly also encourages Member States to conclude negotiations on the Conference outcome by July 2016, at the Preparatory Committee's third session.

IGOs, Development Banks and UN Agencies React to Paris Agreement [viewed]

paris_agreementDecember 2015: Upon adoption of the Paris Agreement by the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, a broad array of stakeholders, including UN agencies, development banks and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), responded to the outcome reached by the 196 UNFCCC Parties. The Agreement, which will be opened for signature in April 2016, aims to strengthen the global response to climate change, hold the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.

Event: World Conference on Disaster Management 2016 [viewed]

The largest of its kind in North America, the World Conference on Disaster Management (WCDM) is expected to bring together more than 1500 attendees and speakers from over 40 countries, including decision makers, as well as practitioners, in emergency management, risk management, crisis communications and first response, and focus on the “before-during-after” crisis cycle. In addition to education sessions, pre- and post-conference workshops and poster presentations the conference will include an interactive tradeshow, during which participants will be able to see the latest technologies in the disaster management industry. Participants will be able to, inter alia: exchange information and experiences from other countries and industries; network globally and locally; and learn about methods to improve preparedness in a cost-effective manner. The conference is being organized by Diversified Communications Canada.
