World Disasters Report Highlights Culture in DRR [viewed]

ifrs28 October 2014: The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has published the ‘World Disasters Report 2014: Focus on Culture and Risk.' The report explores how culture should be considered in disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts and analyzes the influence of disaster and risks on culture. It concludes that DRR approaches must recognize why people are living with risks and how their behavior and attitudes related to culture affect their exposure and sensitivity to hazards.

Discussions Begin on Modalities, Substance of Post-2015 Negotiations [viewed]

UNEP Makes Business Case for Eco-innovation [viewed]

UNEP5 November 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a publication, titled ‘The Business Case for Eco-Innovation,' which is part of UNEP's Eco-innovation Project. According to the publication, companies are facing growing market and regulatory pressures in the face of declining resources and environmental degradation, extreme weather events are impacting on business profitability, and global water demand is expected to exceed supply by 40% within 20 years.

SE4ALL Global Facilitation Office Launched in Vienna [viewed]

SE4ALL3 November 2014: The Global Facilitation Office of the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative was launched on 3 November, in Vienna, Austria, by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The establishment of the office represents a key step in the institutionalization of SE4ALL, which seeks to ensure universal energy access, a doubling of the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, and a doubling of the rate of energy efficiency improvements globally, by 2030.

CCAC Agriculture Initiative Expands to Methane Emissions from Rice [viewed]

ccac-ccaf-ciat-irri31 October 2014: A research effort to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation in Viet Nam, Bangladesh and Colombia has been launched under the Agriculture Initiative of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). Three international research institutions, working together with rice farmers, policy makers and other partners, expect to reduce emissions by 30-50% by using an innovative irrigation method.

Event: Third Session of the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Transport, Trade Logistics and Trade Facilitation [viewed]

The third session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Multi-year Expert Meeting on Transport, Trade Logistics and Trade Facilitation will convene from 24-26 November, under the theme 'Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Transport and Trade Logistics Challenges'. The meeting will focus on SIDS-specific transport-related challenges in light of the outcome of the third International Conference on SIDS, held in September 2014 in Apia, Samoa. Issues to be addressed will include: transport and trade logistics challenges; interlinkages between transport and trade; disaster risks, management and recovery; impacts of climate change on transport infrastructure and related adaption needs; financing as an enabling factor; priority action areas and response measures; and the role of partnerships, partners and collaboration mechanisms. The meeting will be open to participants from government, industry and academia nominated by UNCTAD member states, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and UNCTAD-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
