Equator Prize Announces 2015 Winners [viewed]

equatorinitiative21 September 2015: The 21 winning initiatives of the 2015 Equator Prize include a indigenous group in Brazil that inspired the film 'Avatar'; a conservation group in Indonesia that is saving sea turtles; a movement for pygmy rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and a community-based organization in the poorest region of Afghanistan that is restoring areas affected by conflict and creating new jobs. The prize is the "flagship programme" of the Equator Initiative, a partnership that brings together the UN, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to advance sustainable development solutions.

C20 Calls for World Economy that Works for All [viewed]

g20-turkey16 September 2015: The Civil 20 (C20), a civil society platform of the Group of 20 (G20), issued a communiqué calling for world leaders to champion inclusive growth that respects human life, rights and dignity, and planetary boundaries. The Communiqué was issued by the third annual C20 Summit, which brought together hundreds of civil society delegates to finalize C20's recommendations to the G20 Leaders Summit 2015, taking place in Antalya, Turkey, on 15-16 November 2015.

UNFCCC Reports on 2014-2015 Budget Performance [viewed]

UNFCCC21 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has received €36.6 million, or 77.2% of the total core budget indicative contributions expected for 2014-2015 during the first 18 months of the biennium, according to a note (FCCC/SBI/2015/13) by the Executive Secretary. The document, which details the Secretariat's budget performance, also indicates that approximately 75.8% of the 2014-2015 core budget had been spent as of 30 June 2015.

UNFCCC Reports on 3rd Dialogue on Education and Training [viewed]

UNFCCC21 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a summary report (FCCC/SBI/2015/15) of the 3rd Dialogue on Article 6 of the Convention (education and training), held during the 42nd session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), from 2-3 June 2015. The Dialogue was attended by representatives of governments, and of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as by experts, practitioners and stakeholders. Participants shared experiences and exchanged ideas, best practices and lessons learned regarding climate change education and training, and related international cooperation.

Event: World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Defense of Life [viewed]

This event, to be hosted by the Government of Bolivia, is expected to tackle “the threats of capitalism against life, climate change and the culture of life,” according to Bolivian President Evo Morales. The meeting is expected to result in a declaration, which aims to influence delegates to negotiate a new global climate deal that binds all countries to cuts in emissions. In 2010, Bolivia hosted the 'World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth'.

Event: 23rd Session of the GCOS Steering Committee [viewed]

The 23rd Session of the Global Climate Observing System's (GCOS) Steering Committee is expected to discuss, among other things strategy, review and plans, including the GCOS Implementation Plan. It will also feature a scientific and technical discussion with partners and expert panels on, inter alia: information on preparations for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC; reports on past and future activities; and engagement with GCOS partners. The Committee will also discuss governance and budget. The meeting will be preceded by GCOS Science Day on Monday, 28 September 2015, which will promote and discuss long-term climate observations in the atmosphere, terrestrial and marine systems, as well as climate variables and integration into models. The GCOS Steering Committee Steering provides scientific and technical guidance to sponsoring and participating organizations and agencies for the planning, implementation and further development of GCOS, which is a joint undertaking of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science.

Funded by the European Union, LEO provides an overview of relationships between multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), as well as concepts, definitions and synonyms found in these conventions.

US, Chinese Subnational Leaders Issue Climate Declaration [viewed]
