IISD Event Explores Canada's Contribution to SDGs, Climate Change Agreement [viewed]

iisd25 January 2016: Over 150 people attended an event, titled 'Canada in the Post-2015 World,' which was organized by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and hosted by the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada. The event provided an early look at the landmark agreements achieved in 2015 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and an opportunity to consider how Canada can contribute to sustainable development in the wake of these agreements.

Event: 2016 Investor Summit on Climate Risk: Advancing the Clean Trillion [viewed]

The 2016 Investor Summit on Climate Risk is the first major event on climate change for investors and businesses to discuss the implications of the Paris Agreement. The Summit will explore the investment opportunities provided by the climate deal reached in Paris, with a focus on: the types of capital flows necessary to achieve the deal's goals; opportunities to expand clean energy investment in developed and developing countries; and solutions to mitigating carbon asset risks, including portfolio decarbonization and support for economic development that is less dependent on fossil fuels. The Summit aims to sustain the momentum from Paris and catalyze further actions that investors, businesses and governments can take toward a low-carbon future.

Speakers include: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Former Vice President Al Gore; Michael Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change; UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres; Bank of America Chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan; and French Environment Minister Ségolène Royal. Ceres, the UN Foundation, and the UN Office for Partnerships are co-hosting the Summit.

2016 Zayed Future Energy Prize Winners Announced [viewed]

Zayed Future19 January 2016: The US$4 million Zayed Future Energy Prize has been presented to the winners for 2016. The prize, which recognizes innovative solutions that aim to lead to a sustainable energy future, were announced during a ceremony at the World Future Energy Summit on 19 January 2016 in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Event: Agriculture and Food Systems, Climate Change and Nutrition in CIS Countries [viewed]

This conference will explore the linkages among climate change, agriculture, food systems, social safety nets and nutrition. It will bring together stakeholders from the research, government and donor communities to: exchange and review knowledge; discuss ongoing research efforts; and identify gaps for improvement and future research in the region. The event will help raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and make development in the region more nutrition sensitive. The conference will address: findings from the Global Nutrition Report (2015) focusing on agriculture and food systems, climate change, nutrition-specific interventions and social safety nets in Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries; nutrition-specific programmes and social protection policies in the region; and evidence-based research on the impacts of climate change on nutrition and vice-versa, as well as agriculture-nutrition linkages. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Eurasian Center for Food Security and the World Bank are organizing this conference, which will take place at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

IRENA Assembly Focuses on Accelerating Renewable Energy Transition [viewed]

IRENA17 January 2016: The sixth session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly focused on accelerating the transition to renewable energy, in particular, by mobilizing investment. More than 1,000 officials and other stakeholders from over 150 countries convened in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 16-17 January 2016 to provide strategic and programmatic direction to the agency. In addition, IRENA launched a report on the economic benefits of renewable energy and announced funding for four renewable energy projects in Antigua and Barbuda, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde and Senegal.

Pakistan Panel on Climate Change Established [viewed]

ppcc13 January 2016: A stakeholders' consultative workshop held at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in Islamabad, Pakistan, has established the Pakistan Panel on Climate Change (PPCC) – a think tank aimed to provide science-based technical support to the public and private sectors and civil society in Pakistan and South Asia on matters related to climate change policy.

Conference Discusses the Role of Transport and Cities in Addressing Climate Change [viewed]

Co-hosted by the World Bank and EMBARQ, the urban mobility initiative of the World Resources Institute (WRI) Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, the conference brought together representatives from a wide array of international and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), ministries, cities, municipalities, academia and the private sector.

UN Secretary-General, Global Compact Call on Business to Advance Global Agreements [viewed]

Global Compact14 January 2016: The UN Global Compact (UNGC) Board underscored the role of the private sector and partnerships in advancing global challenges, particularly related to the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Members expressed broad recognition that partnerships are essential for leveraging resources and expertise, and reaching solutions faster and more effectively, according to the Compact's press release.

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016 [viewed]

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is an Abu Dhabi government initiative to address the interconnected challenges affecting energy, water and sustainable development. The largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, ADSW encourages outcomes that pave the way toward sustainability, and provides the opportunity for dialogue and cooperation through policy dialogues, conferences, exhibitions and other events. ADSW 2016 is comprised of: an opening ceremony; the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), including a solar expo and sustainable transport zone; the International Water Summit; the EcoWaste exhibition; and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly. It also will also include the following events: Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy; IRENA Financial Times Debate; Egypt Energy Forum; Abu Dhabi Global Action Day; and the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirate's international awards for energy and sustainability pioneers.

Speakers during the opening event include: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and nine heads of states, including those from the Seychelles, Palau, Kosovo, Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco.

ADSW is being hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, and is expected to attract more than 33,000, with over 80 heads and ministers of state, and other participants from more than 170 countries.

Event: Global Aviation Dialogues: Europe and North Atlantic Region [viewed]

This Europe and North Atlantic regional meeting will take place in the Netherlands to discuss progress regarding the work of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on a global market-based mechanism (MBM) scheme. It is one of several regional meetings forming the second round of Global Aviation Dialogues (GLADs), which will take place during the period from 20 March to 8 April 2016 at five venues across the ICAO regions. GLADs aim to ensure the full engagement of States and other stakeholders on a global MBM scheme for international aviation and to facilitate information exchange. ICAO is developing a global MBM as part of a basket of measures for addressing the contribution of international aviation to climate change.
