Event: Fifth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) [viewed]

The 5th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) is being organized to promote the development, exploration, use and financing of geothermal energy projects. ARGeo - C5, themed 'Geothermal: Solution to Africa Energy Needs,' will serve as an information-sharing platform and will facilitate regional cooperation. The main conference, which will take place 29-31 October, will feature a range of sessions geared toward exploring: risk mitigation; how to attract private developers; fast-tracking projects; stimulating the growth of the industry through investment; and the development, construction and operation of geothermal plants. Participants also have the option of participating in short courses, such as 'Improving Success in Drilling' and 'Financing Geothermal Projects' on 27-28 October. After the conference, an optional field trip on 1-2 November is offered. The African Rift Geothermal Development Facility (ARGeo) Project is organizing the conference in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Tanzania. The UNEP-ARGeo Programme is a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that encourages the development of geothermal energy sources in East Africa to realize their untapped potential and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It was officially launched in 2010 at ARGeo - C3.

ICRAF, CCAFS, CARE Launch 'Gender and Inclusion Toolbox' [viewed]

ccgiar-ccafs-wag15 October 2014: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and CARE International have developed the 'Gender and Inclusion Toolbox: Participatory Research on Climate Change and Agriculture,' an online resource for incorporating gender perspectives into research and climate change projects. The Toolbox includes tested and refined learning activities, exercises, calendars and questionnaires intended to explore such topics as gender roles and women's empowerment.

Event: Transport Day 2014 [viewed]

The Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and the Bridging the Gap Initiative (BtG) are organizing Transport Day 2014 during the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20). The event is organized around the theme 'Transport Tackles Climate Change @ Transport Day 2014' and will feature a series break-out and plenary sessions aiming to raise the profile of the transport sector's climate change mitigation potential. Transport Day will aim to encourage the integration of transport into mitigation and adaptation policy making under the UNFCCC, ensure such and tools and resources as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and technology transfer are appropriate for the transport sector.

Event: COP 20 Global Stakeholders Dialogues: Taking Action on Climate Change [viewed]

This three-day meeting, organized by the Presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will engage Peruvian stakeholder group leaders with representatives of the nine UNFCCC observer constituencies, and the Peruvian UNFCCC negotiations team. Taking place in plenaries open to the public and closed round table settings, the event will: offer information on the role and positions of the different UNFCCC observer constituencies and principal observer organizations; build ties at different levels; and allow for a direct contact between Peruvian constituency representatives and global peers for increased preparedness for COP 20.

September 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

Event: South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum [viewed]

The South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum is co-sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC), WWF-China, UNEP-Tongji-IESD, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Forum, which will take place in the interval of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, aims to contribute to a successful post-2015 climate agreement by promoting South-South Cooperation as an integral part of global action against climate change. It provides an opportunity for participants to engage in the ongoing climate talks and provide recommendations on a number innovative actions, policy setting, financing and institutional development to enable rapid scaling-up of South-South Cooperation initiatives. The Forum will bring together ten ministers from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and Caribbean, representatives from UN agencies, UNEP, UNDP, UNFCCC, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), development agencies, and international organizations, leaders of science and business communities, and practitioners from around the world.

World Summit of Regions Issues Paris Declaration on Climate Action [viewed]

r2013 October 2014: The first World Summit of Regions for Climate brought together over 1,000 representatives of cities, regions, provinces, states, universities and businesses to address climate change, and resulted in a joint declaration calling for commitment to concrete actions on the road to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, when a new climate deal is expected to be agreed.

Disaster Reduction Day Focuses on Contributions of Older People [viewed]

United Nations13 October 2014: This year's International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) focused on the contributions of older people in combating climate change and to the post-2015 disaster risk reduction (DRR) framework. The Day focused on the theme ‘Resilience is for Life,' with celebrations that: called for a more inclusive approach for older people in DRR; emphasized their needs; recognized their role in and contribution to better planning and understanding of disaster risk; and addressed how they can help build resilience in their communities using their experience and knowledge.

FAO Launches Software for Forest Monitoring [viewed]

FAO10 October 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) announced the launch of Open Foris, a suite of open source software tools to monitor forest inventory. Piloted in ten countries, the tools allow for data entry on smart phones or tablets.
