ESCAP to Convene Committee on Disaster Reduction [viewed]

March 2009: The Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will convene the First Session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction, from 25-27 March 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop will include a high-level roundtable on regional cooperation for disaster risk reduction as well as sessions on: implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action in Asia and the Pacific; enhancing regional cooperation on disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific; activities of ESCAP cooperative mechanisms on disaster risk reduction; and the strategic framework and proposed outputs for the proposed programme of work for 2010-2011.

Confronting Climate Change in the Arctic

13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.

13 March 2009: The UNFCCC has posted on its website a document regarding reducing emissions for deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) titled “Implications of REDD baseline methods for different country circumstances during an initial performance period,” submitted by The Nature Conservancy.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Submissions in Preparation for AWG-KP7 [viewed]

9 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a document containing party submissions in preparation for the seventh session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP7), to be held in Bonn, Germany, from 29 March-8 April 2009. The document is titled “Further elaboration of the options, elements and issues contained in annex IV to document FCCC/KP/AWG/2008/3 [possible approaches targeting sectoral emissions and on greenhouse gases, sectors and source categories to be covered] and annex III to document FCCC/KP/AWG/2008/5 [possible options for consideration relating to land use, land-use change and forestry], including on which proposals could address cross-cutting issues, and how.”

Scientific Congress Delivers Preliminary Conclusions on the Latest Science of Climate Change Since IPCC's Last Assessment Report [viewed]

12 March 2009: The international scientific congress titled “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions” took place from 10-12 March 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was organized by the International Alliance of Research Universities and attended by over 2,000 participants from around 80 countries. The main aim of the congress was to provide a summary of existing scientific knowledge two years after the Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released and in the run-up to the UNFCCC conference in Copenhagen in December 2009. The preliminary conclusions of the Congress contain six messages concerning: climatic trends, social disruption, long-term strategy, equity dimensions, consequences of inaction, and meeting the challenge.

ECLAC Presents Climate Change Reports

10 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has launched a report titled “Climate Change and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review.” The report was released during a seminar on “Climate Change: The Challenges for Growth in Chile and Latin America,” which took place on 11 March 2009, in Santiago, Chile. The report concludes that Latin America and the Caribbean may suffer more impacts of climate change than other regions because of the number of island States present in the region, low coastal areas and prevalence of hurricanes. Considering greenhouse gas emissions in the region are relatively low (11.7% of global emissions in 2000) the authors recommend authorities to focus on adaptation.

The congress is being hosted by the University of Copenhagen and attended by over 2,000 participants from around 80 countries.

The workshop was jointly organized by the IPCC, World Climate Research Programme and International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and attended by over 150 leading scientists.
