SPREP Reports on Robotic Sensors Deployment for Ocean Research [viewed]

June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has announced that 13 ocean robots were deployed in equatorial waters near Kiribati to conduct ocean monitoring. The robots, automatic ocean sensors known as Argo floats, will enable scientists to monitor the ocean processes behind El Niño and La Niña events.

European Commission Launches European Resource Efficiency Platform [viewed]

5 June 2012: European Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik unveiled the European Resource Efficiency Platform (EREP), designed to facilitate achievement of the vision outlined in the European Commission's Roadmap to a Resource-Efficient Europe, which aims to decouple resource use and economic growth. The EREP is organized around three elements: greening the economy; setting objectives and measuring progress; and framework conditions for investment in resource efficiency.

Event: Dakar: Managing the Regional Risks of Climate Extremes and Disasters – Learning from the IPCC Special Report [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Overseas Development Institute, Norway's Climate and Pollution Agency, Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) are co-organizing an outreach workshop titled: “Managing the Risks of Climate Extremes and Disasters (SREX) in West Africa – What can we learn from the IPCC Special Report?” The two-day event is designed for policy makers, business leaders, academics and other stakeholders that are, have been, or may be impacted by climate extremes and disasters. The workshop seeks to promote discussion of the IPCC Special Report on "Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters for Advancing Climate Change Adaptation" (SREX). The event is part of a series of outreach events in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean held from April-June 2012.

ITU Symposium Adopts Declaration on ICTs for Climate Change and Sustainable Development [viewed]

5 June 2012: The 7th International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Symposium on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the Environment and Climate Change concluded with the adoption of a Declaration calling on world leaders and other stakeholders attending the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) to reach agreement on how to use ICTs to achieve the global green agenda.
