IICA Forms Mesoamerican Climate Change Adaptation Network [viewed]

25 August 2011: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has reported that it is developing a Mesoamerican scientific-technical network on climate change and agriculture aimed at developing a regional strategy for adapting agriculture to climate variability. IICA is a specialized affiliate of the Organization of American States (OAS).

SPREP Meteorological Meeting Recommends Increased Climate Activities [viewed]

South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)12 August 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) convened the 14th meeting of the Regional Meteorological Services Directors (RMSD), which recommended that Meteorological Service Directors engage in other national climate change initiatives, in particular mitigation resource analysis, in order to contribute expertise and benefit from these new funding opportunities.

Event: GEO-Carbon Conference: Carbon in a Changing World [viewed]

The meeting is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Coordination Action on Carbon Observation Systems (COCOS) of the European Commission. The meeting aims to: present the latest scientific developments in understanding the global carbon cycle; present an overview of the building and implementation of a Global Carbon Observing System for land, oceans and atmosphere; and identify progress and gaps in obtaining politically meaningful estimates of regional carbon budgets on land and ocean. Sessions will address: progress in observing techniques and methodology for land, ocean and atmosphere, including network design, space borne techniques and in situ observations; progress in data model fusion; development of regional carbon budgets for land and ocean; verification requirements in a post-Cancun world; and interfacing carbon cycle knowledge with society, needs, uncertainties and challenges.

Event: Fifteenth Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-15) [viewed]

Convened under the theme “Seasonable Climate Prediction: A Strategic Tool in Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” the 15th Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-15) is being organized by the Southern Africa Development Community in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) to develop a consensus climate outlook for the period from October 2011 until March 2012. SARCOF-15 is also expected to address potential climate impacts on sectors including disaster risk management, food security, and health and water resources. The last rainy season in the region will also be assessed.

Review of the Indonesia-Norway REDD+ Partnership Released [viewed]

UN-REDD11 August 2011: The UN-REDD Programme has reported on the release of the first evaluation of deliverables of the Indonesia-Norway partnership on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock), which was established in May 2010.
