October 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released its Climate Change Adaptation Newsletter, a quarterly publication, highlighting the support the organization is providing to 75 countries in the development of national, sub-national and community level capacities to adapt and build their resilience against climate change risks.
19 October 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), jointly with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), organized a two-day meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that gathered more than 60 of Latin America and the Caribbean's high-level finance and environment governmental officials, along with representatives from the private sector and international organizations, to explore options for long-term climate investments.
19 October 2009: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) participated, on 19 October, in a panel discussion focused on “Climate Change: Impacts and Threats,” based on the Secretary-General's report “Climate Change and its Possible Security Implications.” The event was organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) under the auspices of the Second Committee.
19 October 2009: The Second Technical Meeting of the African high-level expert panel and negotiators on climate change has opened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a view to updating the African common negotiating position for Copenhagen. The meeting is organized by the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) and the African Union, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
17 October 2009: On the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark stressed that climate change has the potential to undermine development and make it worse for those already unable to access adequate shelter, food, energy, clean water and sanitation.
16 October 2009: During a conference on “Environment, Climate Change and Security – Facing the Challenges,” which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on 15 October 2009, and was organized by the Swedish Presidency of the European Union (EU), Swedish State Secretary Joakim Stymne identified six areas for urgent action concerning the security risks posed by climate change.
14 October 2009: In the framework of the Africa-European Union (EU) dialogue, African and EU leaders addressed the “climate change agenda” during the 13th Ministerial Meeting of African and EU Troikas, which convened in Addis Ababa on 14 October 2009.
13 October 2009: The Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) scheme, an initiative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) funded by the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), provides technical support to communities who want to understand what climate change is and how they could potentially deal with it.
12 October 2009: The Regional Bureau for Arab States of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), jointly with the League of Arab States, organized a High-level Partners Meeting on Water Governance in Cairo, Egypt, from 12-13 October 2009.
11 October 2009: The World Forum on Sustainable Development, which convened from 9-11 October 2009, in Ouagadougou, under the theme “Climate Change: What Opportunities for Sustainable Development?” was organized by the Government of Burkina Faso in partnership with the UN, including the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the African Union (AU).
