16 February 2010: A conference on Sub-Saharan Africa, held during the first week of February 2010 at Wiston House in Wilton Park, Sussex, UK, focused on the challenges faced by Africa half way between the report of the Commission for Africa, tabled at the Gleneagles Summit in 2005, and the target date for completion of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015.
February 2010: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) has released a report titled "Rethinking Poverty: Report on the World Social Situation 2010," which aims to contribute to rethinking poverty and its eradication.
February 2010: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released a report titled "Trade and Environmental Review 2009/2010: Promoting Poles of Clean Growth to Foster the Transition to a More Sustainable Economy." The report focuses on the over 140 low-income and least developed countries, which account for less than 10% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions of all developing countries.
23 January 2010: The eighth World General Assembly of the International Basin Organizations Network was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 20-23 January 2010, and brought together over 260 water experts from 41 countries to focus on effective management of Africa's 59 trans-frontier river basins and the positive economic benefits of harnessing their waters for hydropower and irrigation.
November 2009: As part of its flagship publication, the State of the World Population Report, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has released the fourth edition of the youth supplement, which focuses on young people and climate change.
3 February 2010: During a press conference, the Chair of the UN Commission for Social Development, Leslie Kojo Christian, highlighted that the 48th annual session of the Commission for Social Development, which will run from 3-12 February 2010, in New York, US, will focus on social integration as a priority theme.
2 February 2010: The UN University (UNU) hosted the 16th U Thant Distinguished Lecture with President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa of Mexico on “Preserving Our Common Heritage: Promoting a Fair Agreement on Climate Change.” The event was convened in collaboration with Asahi Shimbun and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
The 33rd session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will include a high level panel on: "From summit resolutions to farmers' field: climate change, food security and smallholder agriculture." The panel will discuss how to transform summit declarations into reality. Side events will focus on managing water resources in the context of climate change, natural resource management in sub-Saharan Africa, IFAD's Rural Poverty Report 2010, and smallholder farming in Asia and Latin America.
2 February 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a brochure titled “Case Studies Illustrating the Socio-economic Benefits of Ecological Networks,” highlighting climate change adaptation as one of the benefits.
31 January 2010: In his opening address to the 14th Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU), which has convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 January-2 February 2010, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pledged to mobilize support to tackle the critical challenges threatening peace and prosperity across Africa, including climate change.
