UNECE Region Agrees on Scope, Objectives for Sustainable Housing Charter [viewed]

UNECE8 May 2014: Government Ministers and Agency Heads from 27 countries agreed on the scope and objectives for a Charter on Sustainable Housing in the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region, at the First Informal Meeting of the Committee on Housing and Land Management. The Charter is expected to support the long-term sustainability of the housing sector and the building of green, socially inclusive human settlements.

EC Promotes Resilience of Disaster-Prone Communities [viewed]

European Union29 April 2014: The first EU Resilience Forum assessed progress made on resilience, exchanged best practices and lessons learned, and laid the foundation for further reducing vulnerabilities in risk-prone environments. Specifically, the event aimed to: serve as a catalyst for efforts to support people in areas facing repeated disasters or conflicts; prepare for, withstand and recover from stresses and shocks; and address root causes of disasters and conflicts, rather than only dealing with their consequences.

Event: UNGA Thematic Debate on Human Security [viewed]

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) Thematic Debate on Human Security will address the theme ‘Responding to the opportunities and challenges of the 21st Century: Human Security and the post-2015 development agenda,' and will provide Member States with an opportunity to discuss the UN Secretary-General's third report on human security (A/68/685), which illustrates the potential of a human security approach to overcome obstacles to sustainable development, reduce the likelihood of conflicts and provide a life of dignity for all. The event will also consider how human security might be included in the post-2015 agenda. The debate will include an opening session, an interactive panel discussion and a closing session. It will: assess the perspective of national planning processes towards environmental sustainability, inclusive economic development, inclusive social development and peace and security; and consider human security experiences. The event will also focus on: the causal processes of climate change and its impact on people and communities; and disparities and inequalities, with a particular focus on women in situations of vulnerability.

WFP Maps Climate Vulnerabilities in Andean Region [viewed]

World Food Programme22 April 2014: The poorest communities of the Andean region are especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters, a new atlas released by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) finds. The 'Atlas of Food Security, Disasters and Climate Change' maps climate, food security and disaster threats that will impede the sustainable development of communities in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Global Oceans Action Summit Charts a Path for Ocean Health, Blue Growth [viewed]

OWG Co-Chairs Issue Working Document with 16 Focus Areas, 140 Targets [viewed]

owg17 April 2014: The Co-chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have issued a revised working document in preparation for the OWG's 11th session. The new document represents the latest revision to the set of "focus areas" under consideration in the OWG. It includes 16 focus areas and 140 targets.
