LDC Eminent Persons Group Releases Report [viewed]

29 March 2011: The UN Secretary-General's Eminent Persons Group on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has released its report, titled “Compact for Inclusive Growth and Prosperity.” The report finds that the structural limitations of LDCs must be addressed in order to close the gap between LDCs and the rest of the world, and outlines objectives and targets for a new Programme of Action (PoA), including on small island developing States (SIDS) and climate change.

Global Sustainability Panel Sets Overall Goal, Guiding Principles [viewed]

March 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) has issued the report of the second meeting of the Panel (GSP 2), which took place from 24-25 February 2011, in Cape Town, South Africa. The summary highlights the presentations of the three Working Groups (WGs) that were established to advise the Panel, the Panel's overall vision of sustainability, a framework, and guiding principles for the Panel's work.

Event: Second Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Second Clean Energy Ministerial is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Ministers of the MEF will discuss initiatives that were developed as a result of the first Clean Energy Ministerial, which met in July 2010 in Washington, DC, US. These initiatives sought to eliminate the need to build more than 500 mid-sized power plants, begin smart grid deployment, deploy 20 million electric vehicles by 2020 and bring solar lanterns or other improved energy services to more than 10 million people without access to grid electricity by 2015. Governments participating in Clean Energy Ministerial initiatives include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Norway, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.

Adaptation Fund Board Approves Projects in Solomon Islands, Eritrea and Ecuador [viewed]

18 March 2011: The Adaptation Fund Board has approved funding for projects in Eritrea, Ecuador and the Solomon Islands totaling US$19.5 million. The decisions were taken during the Board's 13th meeting, in Bonn, Germany, on 17-18 March 2011. The Board also approved a project concept from Uruguay that uses the Adaptation Fund's direct access modality for countries to access financing directly.
