31 January 2011: The 16th Summit of the African Union (AU), which took place from 24-31 January 2011, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme "Towards greater unity and integration through shared values," considered, among other pressing issues, the impact of climate change and international cooperation.
2 February 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Resources Institute (WRI) have launched the World Resources Report website, which will gather expert views on responding to climate risks in developing countries to inform the preparation of the World Resources Report.
1 February 2011: During an official three-day visit to Kenya and Somalia, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos noted that Kenya's humanitarian challenges, caused by drought and rapid urbanization, can be addressed by sustainable recovery of livelihoods and restoring local coping mechanisms to deal with climate change-induced disasters.
31 January 2011: Addressing the first regular session of the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), taking place from 31 January-7 February 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UNDP Associate Administrator Rebecca Grynspan reported on the review of the implementation of UNDP's Gender Equality Strategy (2008-2013).
31 January 2011: Opening the first regular session of the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), taking place from 31 January-7 February 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark noted the importance of a strong multilateral system to respond to pressing development needs.
28 January 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) presented a discussion paper on the implications of a hypothetical complete ban on land clearing for agriculture in tropical areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, which underscores that the carbon market will not be sufficient to compensate the rural poor for lost income.
28 January 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) launched the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, which aims to influence policies on sustainable tourism, develop projects and provide a global platform for communication.
19 January 2011: Speaking at the Second Arab Economic, Social and Developmental Summit, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Helen Clark, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, noted that the Third Arab Report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Impact of the Global Economic Crisis highlights the most pressing development challenges of the region, including high unemployment rates and climate change.
December 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the League of Arab States have launched the "Third Arab Report on the Millennium Development Goals 2010 and the Impact of the Economic Crisis."
