CIFOR Newsletter Highlights Global Biofuel Information Tool [viewed]

26 September 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released its September 2011 newsletter, noting the opening of registration for Forest Day at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC in Durban, South Africa, on 4 December 2011. The newsletter also features articles on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock), forest governance and climate change.

Event: International Workshop “Domestic Biogas Programmes in Asia; Transformation Towards Commercial Sectors and Development of Effective Financing Facilities” [viewed]

This workshop is co-organized by the Energy for All Partnership, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Hivos/Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation. Its specific objectives are to: help prepare for the transformation of national biogas programmes to commercial biogas sectors during the period to 2016 by outlining a sector development plan by country, including pro-poor commercialization strategy; and to present and discuss the Asian Rural Biogas Facility as developed by the KfW bank and ADB in the framework of the Energy for All Partnership. The workshop will feature both plenary and parallel sessions, including a session on financing in the domestic biogas sector under the Clean Development Mechanism and non-compliance carbon market. On the second day, the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme will organize a field visit. A total of 120 persons are expected, consisting of delegations from 15 countries in Asia, representatives from the ADB and other potential external financiers and stakeholders from the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme. The workshop is also open to all interested stakeholders.

UNGA General Debate Addresses Impacts of Climate Change, SIDS' Vulnerability [viewed]

26 September 2011: During the general debate of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), a number of speakers referred to the impacts of climate change, addressing, inter alia, the specific vulnerability of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the prospects for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), and the impacts of climate change on food security and disasters.

World Disasters Report 2011 Calls for Action on Hunger and Malnutrition [viewed]

22 September 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have joined with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on the occasion of the launch of the World Disasters Report 2011, which addresses the problem of hunger and malnutrition, highlighting the impacts of climate change on agricultural production.

World Bank, IMF Analyze Impact of Economic Crisis on Development [viewed]

24 September 2011: The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) met in Washington DC, US, for the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors and issued a Development Committee Communiqué noting that the turbulence in global financial markets, volatile commodity prices and pressures on food security pose critical challenges to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

“Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference Discusses Water and Green Economy [viewed]

23 September 2011: The seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference concluded with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration titled “Save water, grow green!” Through the Declaration, ministers agree to take the lead in the transition to a green economy and to make substantive contributions to the discussions on green economy within the context of sustainable development, poverty alleviation and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The event is jointly organized by Bioversity International, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
