UN Secretary-General Calls for Climate Change Action, SD Implementation [viewed]

ban_ki_moonAugust 2015: In his report on the 'Work of the Organization,' UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expresses optimism that “we will soon arrive at a new vision for sustainable development, new directions for the maintenance of peace and security, a renewed embrace of human rights, and a stronger United Nations to help bring our goals to life.” He calls on all countries to submit ambitious national contributions that detail how they will address climate change in the post-2020 period.

UNGA President Circulates Amended 2030 Agenda [viewed]

post201512 August 2015: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Sam Kutesa, circulated the outcome document of the UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, agreed by consensus at the conclusion of the intergovernmental negotiation process on 2 August 2015. Kutesa informed Member States that he will convene a plenary meeting of the Assembly in early September to take action on a draft resolution that will transmit the outcome document to the UNGA's 70th session for consideration and adoption during the Summit.

Event: Seventh International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS VII) [viewed]

The Seventh International Conference on Agricultural Statistics will take place under the theme 'Modernization of agricultural statistics in support of the Sustainable Development Agenda'. The conference, which will bring together economists, statisticians, researchers and analysts working on agricultural and rural statistics, is expected to discuss changing needs and opportunities for agricultural statistics, particularly in the context of the development of the indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will include plenary sessions and parallel sessions on: poverty, rural development and the social dimension of agriculture; sustainable agricultural production and consumption; markets, prices and values chains for the agribusiness sector; natural resource use in agriculture (soil, water, fishery, forestry, biodiversity); climate change and environmental issues: the role of agriculture; and data sources, data collection, use of information technology tools and data quality; data analysis integration and modeling; and data dissemination and communication and the use of statistics for policy making and research. Interested participants should submit abstracts in response to the call for papers by 30 September 2015. The Italian National Institute of Statistics is organizing the conference in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Being Prepared for UNGA Consideration [viewed]

post20152 August 2015: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted at the conclusion of the post-2015 development agenda negotiations on 2 August 2015, contains five sections, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) in 2014, with several revisions for specificity and consistency with international ambition. The document for consideration by the 69th UN General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to be finalized and made available ahead of the UN summit for the adoption of the agenda, which will take place from 25-27 September 2015.

UN Finalizes 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development [viewed]

post2015-in82 August 2015: The final version of the draft post-2015 development agenda, titled ‘Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' was adopted by acclamation at the conclusion of an informal plenary of intergovernmental negotiations. The adoption came at the end of a two-week session and concluded a seven-month process to agree on the UN's development agenda to follow up on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and seek to achieve sustainable development.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), AfDB, the European Commission, EIB and the World Bank also released publications on financing and deploying clean energy.

Stern Confirms Economic Case for Climate Action [viewed]

nicholas_stern22 July 2015: An article released ten years after the 'Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change' reaffirms that the cost of inaction on climate change is still greater than the cost of action. Authored by Nicholas Stern, who authored the original Review, the article, titled 'Economic Development, Climate and Values: Making Policy,' finds that the case for climate action is even stronger today than at the time of the Stern Review's publication a decade ago.

Vatican, Mayors Highlight Links between Climate Change and Human Trafficking [viewed]

During the event, titled 'Modern Slavery and Climate Change: The Commitment of Cities,' the Pope and the mayors signed a declaration highlighting the "very vital role" of cities "in the face of the emergencies attributable to human-induced climate change, social exclusion, and extreme poverty."

post2015July 2015: Civil society organizations have responded to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3), and have released responses and summaries to the draft outcome document for the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. Responses address, inter alia: areas of consensus and disagreement on the post-2015 draft; recommendations on improving text related to inequality, climate change, energy, land and other topics; data challenges; the translation of discourse into policy; education; and the role of business.
