The workshop was convened under the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change (NWP).

UN Secretary-General Stresses Importance of Climate Issues in Finding Aral Sea Solutions [viewed]

© UN28 April 2009: In a message delivered by Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the summit of member States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 28 April 2009. Noting that the Aral Sea has shrunk by 70% in recent decades, he stated that climate variability poses a further challenge in this region where water resources are particularly vulnerable.

© Indigenous Peoples' Global Summit on Climate Change24 April 2009: The Indigenous People's Global Summit on Climate Change, hosted by the Inuit Circumpolar Council, convened from 20-24 April 2009, in Anchorage, Alaska. The Summit was supported by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), the UN University (UNU), the Northern Forum and other international organizations, and attracted nearly 500 indigenous representatives, from 5,000 distinct indigenous groups across 80 nations, to discuss how to integrate indigenous views, policies, traditional values and visions into the global response to the challenges of climate change.

UNEP Warns of Collapse of Antarctic Ice Bridge [viewed]

IMO Publishes Revised Regulations and Technical Code on Air Pollution from Ships [viewed]

March 2009: The Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands will hold its 15th meeting from 30 March-3 April 2009, in Gland, Switzerland. Participants are scheduled to establish a number of Thematic Work Area Working Groups and to identify their core membership, including one on “wetlands and climate change” to be chaired by Max Finlayson (Australia).
