World Oceans Day Highlights Impacts of Climate Change on Marine Life [viewed]

8 June 2009: World Oceans Day was celebrated officially for the first time on 8 June. The 2009 event focused on the theme “Our Oceans, Our Responsibility.” In a message to mark the Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the impacts of human activities on marine life, emphasizing that climate change causes sea temperature increases, sea-level rise and ocean acidification.

In relation to biodiversity and climate change, the report highlights the following activities: a capacity development workshop for the Pacific on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, the Mainstreaming of Biodiversity and the Integration of Climate Change (2-6 February 2009, Nadi, Fiji); and an online dialogue on the links between biodiversity, climate change adaptation and risks and vulnerabilities (9-20 March 2009) in preparation for the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Biodiversity and Climate Change.

EU and Canadian Leaders Address Climate Change, the Environment and Energy Security [viewed]

© EU6 May 2009: The leaders of the EU and Canada met in Prague, Czech Republic, on 6 May 2009, for their regular summit and adopted a declaration reiterating that their priority areas include climate change and the environment, and energy security and sustainability. In the declaration, the EU and Canadian leaders expressed their commitment to continue their cooperation in the context of their High-Level Dialogue on Energy, highlighting carbon capture and storage (CCS), bioenergy, and distributed generation and smart electricity networks as priority collaboration areas.
