7th SPC Heads of Fisheries Meeting Discusses Impact of Climate Change [viewed]

4 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) convened the 7th SPC Heads of Fisheries Meeting from 1-4 March, in Noumea, New Caledonia. The meeting brought together fisheries representatives from 14 Pacific Island Countries and included a one-day session on climate change, where delegates considered the impact of climate change on Pacific fisheries.

Event: Ocean Climate and Marine Ecosystems in the Western Pacific: IOC/WESTPAC Eighth International Scientific Symposium [viewed]

This Symposium is organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC). It aims to bring together marine scientists with a view to encouraging an interdisciplinary approach towards the management and sustainable development of coasts and oceans with the growing challenges of climate change. Issues to be addressed include: coastal acidification; climate modeling and prediction; marine remote sensing; and paleoclimatology (corals and monsoon).

ESCAP Trust Fund Expands to Include Disaster Preparedness and Climate Change [viewed]

3 March 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) has announced that the UN ESCAP trust fund supporting early warning systems for tsunamis will be expanded to include disaster preparedness and climate change activities in Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia countries.

Event: Earth Observation Support for Sustainable Tourism in Small Island States [viewed]

This third regional workshop in the Workshop Series of the GEO Coastal Zone Community of Practice (CZCP) will focus on the Caribbean and will be organized in partnership with the Caribbean Regional Association (CaRA) for the Caribbean Integrated Coastal Ocean Observing System (CarICOOS), the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), the Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS), the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). Specific objectives of the regional workshop will include: using Earth observations to improve sustainability of tourism; managing coastal tourism assets; planning for and adapting to coastal change; sustaining tourism under a changing climate; assessing and preparing for climate change and its impact on coastal zones; and tourism and ecosystems.

UN DESA Releases Journal Highlighting Work on Islands, Biofuels and Transport [viewed]

February 2011: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) has released the latest edition of its journal titled “Natural Resources Forum: A United Nations Sustainable Development Journal” (Volume 35, Issue 1), with articles on water governance, atoll livelihoods, Brazilian ethanol policy, sustainable transport and corruption in Africa, highway emissions projections for India, and opinions on the usefulness of the concept of a green economy.
