Oceans Day at Rio Pavilion Celebrates Ten Years of the Global Ocean Forum [viewed]

16 June 2012: Oceans Day took place at the Rio Conventions Pavilion, on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The event consisted of seven panels, a lunch celebrating ten years of the Global Ocean Forum and the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and a closing session presenting the outcomes of Oceans Day to the Rio+20 process.

SPC/FAO Workshop Examines Climate Change Impacts on Pacific Fisheries and Aquaculture [viewed]

SPC13 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) convened a workshop aimed to transfer the results of SPC's recent vulnerability assessment, titled “Vulnerability of Tropical Pacific Fisheries and Aquaculture to Climate Change,” and to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture in the region.

UNESCO IOC Takes Stock of West African Coastal Adaptation Project [viewed]

13 June 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has convened a seminar to analyze the results of a project titled Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal zones of West Africa (ACCC), discuss ways to fill gaps identified during the project, and agree on future action.

GEF Council Meeting Approves Largest Work Program to Date [viewed]

After the GEF Council unanimously decided to appoint Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the next GEF CEO/Chairperson, she greeted the Council and current CEO/Chairperson Monique Barbut.7 June 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a Work Program of 84 projects and two programmatic approaches amounting to US$667.26 million in GEF project grants, and appointed Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the GEF's new Chairperson and CEO.

SPREP Reports on Robotic Sensors Deployment for Ocean Research [viewed]

June 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has announced that 13 ocean robots were deployed in equatorial waters near Kiribati to conduct ocean monitoring. The robots, automatic ocean sensors known as Argo floats, will enable scientists to monitor the ocean processes behind El Niño and La Niña events.

8 June 2012: World Oceans Day, celebrated on 8 June 2012, featured a panel discussion to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Day aims to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with oceans.
