UNGA Debate Addresses Climate Change [viewed]

unga703 October 2015: During the general debate of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Heads of State and Government as well as Vice-Presidents, ministers and other high-level officials addressed climate change, among other issues. The statements to the UNGA, which were delivered from 28 September to 3 October 2015 in New York, US, tackled, inter alia: the 2015 agreement; the long-term global goal; climate finance; climate impacts and losses; and mitigation pledges. The general debate followed on the heels of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, during which the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted.

Second Our Ocean Conference6 October 2015: The Second Our Ocean Conference generated US$2.1 billion in commitments on oceans, including announcements of more than 80 initiatives on marine conservation and protection and the protection of over 1.9 million square kilometers of ocean. The Conference aimed to promote voluntary governmental and institutional commitments to care for the world's oceans.

Second Eye on Earth Summit Opens in Abu Dhabi [viewed]

Eye on Earth6 October 2015: The second Eye on Earth Summit has opened in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with leaders hailing the agreement on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that was unanimously adopted by UN Member States in September. The Summit aims to spark new partnerships, agreement on guidelines for data governance and support for countries developing their own environmental data policies.

Event: 34th Meetings of the CCAMLR and its Scientific Committee [viewed]

The 34th meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and its Scientific Committee will convene in Hobart, Australia. The meeting is expected to address, among other issues: illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; climate change; catch documentation scheme (CDS); vessel monitoring system (VMS); harvested species (krill, fish; fish and invertebrate by-catch); incidental mortality; spatial management and impacts on the Antarctic system; compliance with conservation measures in force; and compliance evaluation procedures.

Blue Guardians Initiative on Oceans to Support SIDS Resilience to Climate Change [viewed]

clinton_global_initiative1 October 2015: An international initiative, titled ‘Blue Guardians,' has been launched by former US President Bill Clinton, to address the urgent need for climate change action through recognition of the role of oceans in climate change resilience and mitigation. The initiative will promote the development of 39 sustainable island economies while increasing their resilience to climate change and promoting marine and fisheries conservation and clean renewable energy.

New Permanent Observer Highlights Pacific Issues [viewed]

SPC logo27 September 2015: The Pacific Community, which became a Permanent Observer to the UN in December 2014, enabling it to participate in UN debates, made its first statement at the UN Sustainable Development Summit. Pacific Community Director-General Colin Tukuitonga highlighted climate change, youth, oceans and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as particularly concerning to the Pacific region. He also noted that education is a fundamental building block for sustainable development.

Speakers welcomed the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with many praising the focus on poverty eradication and inequality. Many speakers also addressed UN reform and peace and security, including discussion of Syria and the refugee crisis.
