15 March 2012: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a new report, titled "OECD Environmental Outlook to 2050: The Consequences of Inaction." The report presents the latest projections of socio-economic trends over the next four decades, and their implications for climate change, biodiversity, water and health impacts of environmental pollution.
15 March 2011: The National Management Unit in Solomon Islands of the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) project conducted a two-day consultation with communities of Ontong Java to present the results of the Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment carried out in May 2010.
15 March 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the Kiribati Cabinet has recently agreed to purchase land in neighboring Fiji, as “climate change insurance” for its population. The decision comes as Kiribati President Anote Tong renews calls to the international community to address the effects of climate change threatening to submerge many of Kiribati's low-lying atolls.
14 March 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Multi One Attitude Foundation have announced that the trimaran RACE FOR WATER will participate in races around the world, to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the ocean and freshwater resources.
14 March 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Kriton Arsenis, Member of the European Parliament (MEP), held an information session at the European Parliament to raise awareness on current ocean-related issues in the lead up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
8 March 2012: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government have approved an implementation plan for its Regional Framework for Achieving Development Resilient to Climate Change, and have agreed to hold a special meeting prior to the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) that will seek to ensure that small island developing State (SIDS) concerns are fully acknowledged in the Rio+20 outcome.
5 March 2012: During an official visit in Beijing, China, David Sheppard, Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), met with China Development Gateway, the official online source of information and development tools for the Chinese Government. Sheppard provided an overview of the work of SPREP and discussed opportunities for future joint cooperation with China.
2 March 2012: The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a series of guidelines to support the uniform implementation of mandatory measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) from international shipping.
1 March 2012: The World Bank has approved a US$300.75 million loan to strengthen Mexico's social resilience to extreme situations, in particular those caused by climate change. The development policy loan promotes state-level climate change action planning, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and the implementation of land development activities, especially at the municipal level, as well as community-level sustainable forest management (SFM). This is the first World Bank programme that focuses on reducing the social impact from climate change effects.
29 February 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has reported that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) of Japan. SPC and FFPRI will conduct collaborative research activities (CRAs) to identify and provide solutions to issues of tree breeding and stand improvement in coastal areas.
