Event: UNGA High-Level Event on Desertification [viewed]

In December 2010, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted by consensus the draft resolution recommended by the Second Committee (65/160) on Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa (UNCCD). It agreed to hold a one-day, high-level meeting, in September 2011, on “addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication,” in order to help raise awareness at the highest level, reaffirm the fulfillment of all commitments to the Convention and its 10-year strategic plan and framework (2008-2018), and ensure a higher priority for desertification, land degradation and drought at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Event: 40th GEF Council Meeting [viewed]

The GEF Council functions as the main governing body of the GEF. Its 32 members meet twice a year, with each representing a group of countries (‘constituency') including both donors and recipients of GEF funding. GEF funding is channeled to several focal areas, namely: biological diversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, ozone layer depletion and persistent organic pollutants.

Event: International Year of Forests [viewed]

Based on Resolution 61/193, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2006, 2011 has been declared International Year of Forests (IYF). The UN Forum on Forests will serve as the focal point for the implementation of the International Year of Forests, in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and international, regional and subregional organizations and processes as well as relevant major groups.

6 December 2010: Participants at Agriculture and Rural Development Day (ARDD) 2010, which convened in Cancun, Mexico, on 4 December 2010, in parallel with the UN Cancun Climate Change Conference, discussed agriculture sector adaptation and mitigation strategies and identified recommendations for UNFCCC negotiators regarding these strategies.
