Event: First Africa Drylands Week [viewed]

The First Africa Drylands Week will be held back-to-back with the global observance event on 17 June to mark World Day to Combat Desertification. Over 100 scientists and representatives of government and international and civil society organizations will convene in Dakar, Senegal, from 10-17 June 2011, to develop an integrated approach to address the Region's challenges of desertification and biodiversity loss, and the new climate change threat. This meeting, which is being co-organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is working towards a global vision and partnership on the Sustainable Land and Climate Risk Management for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative.

CBD April Bulletin Highlights Meetings of Joint Liaison Group, Biodiversity Conventions Group [viewed]

16 May 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published its Monthly Bulletin of Activities for April 2011, which indicates that the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions has formalized the terms of reference of modus operandi of the group, identified joint high-level activities for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) as well as the 20th anniversary of the Conventions in 2012, and agreed on new and revised joint publications on climate change adaptation, forests and gender.

UNDP Releases MDG Report for the Kyrgyz Republic [viewed]

16 May 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic have launched the Second Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report for the Kyrgyz Republic, which presents an analysis of MDG achievement based on the indicators proposed in the first report, the indicators used in State strategies and programmes, and with special focus on the impacts of the global financial crisis and climate change.

UNCCD Calls for Input on Draft Documents [viewed]

May 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has called for parties to provide input on draft advocacy policy frameworks on gender and on the integration of land and soil issues into the intergovernmental process on climate change. Comments are also requested on the draft version of "Global Drylands: A United Nations System-wide Response," which was was developed by the Environment Management Group (EMG).

High Level Taskforce Calls for Establishment of Global System for Climate Services [viewed]

12 May 2011: The High Level Task Force on a Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), which emerged from the World Climate Conference 3 of 2009, has released a report titled "Climate Knowledge for Action: A Global Framework for Climate Services - Empowering the Most Vulnerable." The report recommends the establishment of a global system to provide information to help manage climate risks and opportunities.

UNDP Conducts Survey on Africa-Asia Drought Risk Management [viewed]

UNDPMay 2010: The UN Development Programme Drylands Development Centre (UNDP-DDC) is conducting a survey on the Africa-Asia Drought Risk Management Peer Assistance (AADP) Project under the framework of the Integrated Drylands Development Programme. The project aims to create an enabling environment for inter-regional knowledge sharing among drought-prone countries, while facilitating the scaling up of proven drought risk management (DRM) practices in Africa and Asia.
