Event: GEF Europe and CIS Expanded Constituency Workshop [viewed]

The GEF Europe and CIS Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) will bring together GEF focal points, focal points from the main Conventions (Biodiversity, Desertification, Climate Change and POPs), representatives from civil society and representatives from GEF agencies. It will include participants from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine.

Event: CIF Partnership Forum 2011 [viewed]

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Partnership Forum 2011 has been rescheduled to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on 24-25 June. The Forum provides an opportunity for all stakeholders – governments, civil society, indigenous peoples, private sector, and others – to contribute to deepening global understanding of climate change and development in the CIF context. It will be immediately preceded by a series of associated meetings, including pilot country meetings, from 20-23 June. In addition, stakeholders unable to attend the meeting in Cape Town are invited to participate in an online live-streaming event of the sessions titled “Greening Clean Energy Sources: Managing the Social and Biodiversity Trade-Offs for Wind Energy,” which will take place on 24 June 2011 in the morning.

UN Secretary-General at AU Summit: "The World Can Meet its Environmental Challenge" [viewed]

30 January 2011: Speaking at a side event on “Drylands and Pastoral Populations” held during the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that, although the first Earth Summit had provided vision for achieving the economic, social and environmental pillars of sustainable development, the world has yet to see comprehensive, coherent action and results on climate change, desertification and biodiversity.

UNCCD and GEF Secretariats Discuss GEF-5 Policies and Programmes [viewed]

Event: GEF STAP Meeting [viewed]

The meeting will review progress on the current STAP work plan, identify new areas for work plan inclusion, and prepare for the May 2011 GEF Council meeting. With respect to current focal areas, it is likely the meeting will have a strong emphasis on climate change as well as adaptation and climate resilience.

Event: UNGA High-Level Event on Desertification [viewed]

In December 2010, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted by consensus the draft resolution recommended by the Second Committee (65/160) on Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa (UNCCD). It agreed to hold a one-day, high-level meeting, in September 2011, on “addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication,” in order to help raise awareness at the highest level, reaffirm the fulfillment of all commitments to the Convention and its 10-year strategic plan and framework (2008-2018), and ensure a higher priority for desertification, land degradation and drought at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
