July-August 2010 Issue of UNCCD News Focuses on Decade for Deserts [viewed]

16 August 2010: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released the July-August 2010 issue of UNCCD News, which focuses on the launch of the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification (UNDDD). This special issue contains statements from 15 leaders, pledging their commitment and the backing of their organizations to the Decade.

Event: Launch of UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification [viewed]

To promote actions that will protect the world's drylands from further deterioration and degradation into deserts, the United Nations will launch the Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification on 16 August 2010. The Decade will be launched during the opening of the 2nd International Conference on Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semi-arid Regions. The Decade of events are spearheaded by the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in collaboration with the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the UN Secretariat in New York, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and other relevant UN bodies.

Event: International Scientific Conference on Advanced Scientific Tools for Desertification Policy [viewed]

This conference is co-organized by the Global Mechanism (GM), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It aims to “set up a discussion on the scientific research tools and results, recently achieved at the European and international levels addressing desertification assessment and mitigation.”
