This conference will focus on the restoration of the world's forests and tackling climate change. It will feature case studies of forest restoration successes, and discussions on actions to be taken for forests to achieve climate change objectives. It will also include a session on "Post Copenhagen: Delivering REDD+."
22 March 2010: To mark World Water Day, the UN General Assembly held a High-Level Dialogue on the implementation of the International Decade for Action on “Water for Life” 2005-2015, and the realization of the internationally agreed water-related development goals. The Dialogue was held on 22 March 2010, and was organized around panels on: Water and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); Water, Climate Change and Disasters; and Water and Peace and Security.
11 March 2010: The Department for International Development (DFID) of the UK Government hosted a conference titled "Agenda 2010: the Turning Point on Poverty." The event took place on 11 March 2010, in London, UK, and gathered around 80 technical experts from UN agencies and academic institutions, key ministers and policy makers from developing countries.
This meeting, which is supported by members of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, will examine the need for investment in agricultural research and the roles that can be played by various institutions to increase the impact of new knowledge among the poor.
15 March 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report titled "Environment Outlook for the Arab Region: Environment for Development and Human Well-being," which outlines the multiple challenges facing the Arab region, from climate change and food insecurity to decreasing water availability and unemployment.
12 March 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Africa's (UNECA) Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa (SRO-EA) has published a report that highlights the effects of climate change on food security in East Africa.
14 March 2010: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) convened a meeting to discuss the fifth replenishment of its Trust Fund, during which participants considered replenishment options between US$3.6-4.6 billion for the period 2010-2014.
January 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has published a briefing on the implications of the negotiations on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) for forest restoration. Prepared by Lera Miles, the briefing provides an update on negotiations under the UNFCCC, noting that the expansion of the REDD concept to REDD+ (including conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) provides an opportunity for carbon-focused forest restoration efforts.
9 March 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated 30 fact sheets for the celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010. The fact sheets provide a brief synopsis on key issues related to the CBD and the Biosafety Protocol, including climate change and biodiversity.
1 March 2010: The International Food Policy Research Institute's (IFPRI) new project, Global Futures for Agriculture, will evaluate promising technologies, investments and policy reforms to improve agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability in developing countries.
