Event: Central and Eastern Europe Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to UNCCD COP 10 [viewed]

In preparation for the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which is scheduled to take place in Changwon City, Republic of Korea, from 10-21 October 2011, the UNCCD Secretariat is organizing the Central and Eastern Europe Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to COP 10 and meetings of its subsidiary bodies. Participants will convene for a SRAP Alignment Workshop on 31 August 2011, and the Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to COP10 from 1-3 September 2011.

Event: 37th Special Session of CARICOM's Council on Trade and Economic Development (COTED) [viewed]

This special session of COTED will discuss work on the Community's environmental policy framework and cooperative efforts regarding climate change, sustainable land management and renewable energy. Among other things, participants will discuss Community follow-up to the Cancun Climate Change Conference and preparations for Durban Climate Change Conference. COTED also will discuss Community preparations for the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). COTED is also expected to review and approve the draft Caribbean Subregional Action Plan (SRAP) on sustainable land management (SLM) and decide how to finance its implementation. The SRAP is one of the outputs of the Partnership Initiative on Sustainable Land Management in the Caribbean SIDS (PISLM) supported by the UNCCD's Global Mechanism. In addition, the Special Session will receive an update on progress in developing CARICOM's Environment and Natural Resources Policy Framework, and will review work on the CARICOM Renewable Energy Road Map.

Follow-up Meeting on the Horn of Africa Crisis Calls for Tackling the Root Causes of the Crisis [viewed]

18 August 2011: The follow-up meeting for the Horn of Africa Crisis, hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), concluded with a call for a “twin track” approach to the crisis that will meet the relief needs as well as address the root causes of the crisis and strengthen the local population's resilience for possible future crises.

ICRISAT Meeting Focuses on Building Climate-Resilient Rainfed Agriculture [viewed]

16 August 2011: The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), with JSW-Time India Earth Care Initiatives 2011, organized a Roundtable on Climate Change and Rainfed Farming Systems that focused on providing sustainable and science-based solutions and pro-poor approaches to climate change adaptation.

GEF Funds Environmental Fiscal Reform in Moldova [viewed]

UN Secretary-General Releases Report on Sustainable Mountain Development [viewed]

11 August 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has published a report of the UN Secretary-General that was prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in response to UNGA resolution 64/205 requesting the Secretary-General to report to it at its 66th session on the status of sustainable development in mountain regions.

UN Secretary-General Circulates Note on Implementation of Rio Conventions [viewed]

Event: Emergency in the Horn of Africa: Follow-Up and Response Actions [viewed]

This meeting is hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for its member States, and humanitarian and development partners. It constitutes a second session in a rapid follow-up to the Emergency Ministerial-Level Meeting on the Drought in the Horn of Africa held on 25 July 2011. The meeting is expected to take stock of the situation, including discussions on aid pledged, actions undertaken, and the shortfalls that may exist in these key areas. The meeting will also address the root causes of the crisis and the longer-term needs of region to enhance livelihood resilience, thus building up on the work of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
