UNU-EHS Lecture Focuses on Nansen Initiative, Disaster-induced Migration [viewed]

27 March 2013: The UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) hosted a lecture by Walter Kälin, Envoy of the Chairmanship of the Nansen Initiative, on human displacement across borders as a result of natural disasters. Kälin introduced the Nansen Initiative, which aims to build consensus among governments on how to address cross border displacement following slow-onset and sudden disasters.

IFPRI Global Food Policy Report Urges Increased Action to Fight Hunger [viewed]

March 2013: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released the 2012 Global Food Policy Report, which projects that the international community will fall short of meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger by 2015.

Event: Workshop on Developing Forest Adaptation Strategies under Changing Climate Scenarios [viewed]

In collaboration with the United States Forest Service (USFS), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing a regional workshop on forest fire management that will focus on developing forest adaptation strategies under changing climate scenarios and the use of geospatial support systems for improved forest fire management. Delegates from relevant institutions of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan will participate. The workshop will devote one day to policy, during which senior policy makers from the different countries will be invited to share experiences, challenges and lessons learned, along with recommendations for improving policies, mainstreaming of technical inputs and future collaboration. The workshop will dedicate two days to technical training on: fire detection mapping, highlighting the underlying theory of remote sensing; and operational aspects of the SERVIR-Himalaya forest fire monitoring application. Other issues on the agenda will be climate change, forest fire risk assessment, and fire behavior models.

IPC-IG Collects Evidence on Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

Global Conference Focuses on Solutions for Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

22 March 2013: The Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture, which took place at the University of California, Davis, US, brought together over 300 participants to discuss science-based solutions that use knowledge systems in new ways to increase the resilience of food systems and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes in the context of future uncertainty on climate change and extreme events.

FAO Releases Report on the State of Mediterranean Forests [viewed]
